A group of nine curved kiln furniture supplements - mainly ‘applied strips’, which are hand formed clay rolls that were used to stabilise the load in the kiln during stacking. The fragments have sub rounded cross sections varying from 7 to 15mm in thickness. These typically have contact impressions of the pipe stems or bowls on them and were only used once, being discarded after the firing. The more tightly curved piece may be a ‘wad’, used to bed a mushroom support in the centre of the muffle against which the unfired pipes were stacked.

A complete ceramic ring prop, part of the furniture from a kiln. The object comprises a ring, crudely fashioned from a cylinder of pale pinkish-white clay, which has been curled into a loop and fired. The surface is partially coated with a brown-green glaze and there are areas of burning and over-firing evident. There a three projecting prongs on either side of the ring to separate and support the vessel(s) in the kiln (most likely flatware). These props are clearly pinched by hand and some have fingerprints preserved at their base.

Incomplete ceramic bar of tapering sub-square cross-section, broken (not recently) at the wide end. The surfaces are smooth and the fabric is hard, quite fine, dull pinkish with pale yellowish brown streaks indicating poor clay preparation, sparse mica, and one flint or chert inclusion 9mm across. The fabrics of most Roman kiln bars in this area of Norfolk are much coarser and often contain organic inclusions, but this is more likely to be a kiln bar of the Roman period than something more recent. Weight 227g. Extant length 123mm. 42 x 39mm at the break. 2nd - 4th century.

A group of ceramic kiln furniture and possible kiln wasters dating from about AD 1750-1950. All were found on the same arable field. There are two possible wasters, which could also be cylindrical strips of clay that have fused together. There are also two triangular kiln stilts or supports and five bi-conical terminals form kiln furniture rods. They are all made of cream coloured ceramic.
The largest piece is 87.6mm long, 22.9mm wide, 14.4mm thick and weighs 39.20g.

A ceramic "stilt", an item of kiln furniture dating from about AD 1750 - 1950. It is triangular in plan and one face is a pyramid with concave faces. The reverse has a circular hollow in the centre and a pointed leg or projection at each corner. It is made of cream coloured glazed ceramic, cracked in the hollow. It is 20.8mm long, 19.7mm wide and 12mm thick. 2.1g.
The stilt would have been used to separate flatware in a kiln. Similar examples were discovered at Bretby, in a site dating from the late 19th-20th century (Maria Kneafsey pers. comm., October 2020). Compare also NLM-A06563.

An incomplete hand formed ceramic object of primitive shape, style and construction. Possibly medieval or Post Medieval in date, it seems too irregular to be part of a pottery vessel. If it is a part of a pottery vessel then its very rough construction and shape makes it difficult to estimate its inner diameter with any confidence but is probably around 80mm. It may, however, be part of a spherical object or an irregularly shaped object such as kiln furniture. Both iron working sites and lime kilns are though to have existed in the general area, as well as the industry connected with …

A piece of ceramic building material, brick, probably used as kiln furniture, AD.1500-1700. The brick is covered in a transparent green glaze but is off an irregular shape suggesting it was not intentionally glazed. It is likely it was used as a spacer for a kiln and has been glazed by contact with the ceramics.

A post-medieval fragment of stoneware sagger (kiln furniture) from the delftware industry and dating to 17th / 18th century. The fragment is rectangular in shape and convex/ concave in profile. It has breaks at two opposing ends but both faces and sides are otherwise completely covered with a grey-green glaze. The fabric is grey in colour with numerous small rounded black inclusions.
Stuart Wyatt comments, 'there are a few [of these] on the database as we get quite a lot from the Thames due to kiln waist being used as hardcore for revetments'. Cf. LON-8A2EA1.

A large piece of fired clay which is probably Roman kiln furniture dating from AD 43 - 410. The structure is roughly conical, but only half of the diameter survives and the narrower top is truncated.
The structure is made from fired clay which is very difficult to distinguish from the sandy clay topsoil which fills the cavities. It is also not clear when the unfired material entered the structure; pre- or post-deposition. The top end of the cylinder is filled with burnt material, possibly ash from the kiln. The lower part of the cone is only partially fired, the solid parts varying…

A group of 14 pieces of probable kiln furniture or base. The pieces are mainly of stone which displays evidence of heating and they have greater or lesser deposits of glaze and/or slag like material adhering to them. At least 2 pieces are distorted and over fired pieces of ceramic, probably wasters. The glaze is purple, through green, to yellow and suggests a Medieval or Post Medieval date. The slag like deposits have a bubbly texture, and pieces of quartz and sad adhere to both the glaze and slag-like material. The ceramic fragments are grey throughout and very hard. The sizes of the…

A cobble of very hard fine grained, quartz rich composite stone, now in five pieces of which four survive, which seems to have been used as kiln furniture, or been in a pottery kiln for another reason, because it has glaze in patches on all faces. The pebble is roughly rectangular in plan and triangular in profile. The glaze is clear with patches of rich olive green (iron based?). The stone is pink on the inner faces, revealed where it has broken. The stone has fractured, perhaps due to heat, but the break occurred post-recovery. It may have been used as a spacer in the kiln on which …

A piece of post medieval ceramic kiln furniture dating to the period c. AD 1600 - 1800. The fragment comprises a piece of a tile setter or tile rack. It exhibits a series of incomplete parallel projections on both sides which would have held high quality tiles in place during the firing process.
The fabric is a buff-red colour and exhibits occasional white silicaceous inclusions.
The artefact most likely derives from the Dunster Warren brickworks.
The object measures 125.71mm in length, 83.51mm maximum width, 15.26mm minimum width, 60.22mm maximum thickness, 27.34mm minimum t…

A fragment of pottery of uncertain function - it is most probably a piece of ceramic kiln furniture which originally was circular in shape and is lentoid in cross section. Based on the sherd present it is most probably of Roman date, however due to the symplistic form to could be Medieval or even later in date. The fragment is crescent shaped in plan, broadly circular in cross section, and curved in profile. A distinct U shaped notch is present on two sides the upper and exterior edges. The fabric is orange (oxidised) buff colour with no change of colour in cross section. It is mica r…

Roman grey ware kiln bar. It is rectangular in section with a sub triangular form, and has an uneven surface. These object are often referred to as 'cigar' shaped when whole and it forms one of a number of bars arranged like spokes, that would form a base for pots to sit on in a kiln. A number of these have been found across Leicestershire by members of the public.
