A bent and extremely corroded iron horsehoe of post medieval date. The central aperture has a maximum width of 48mm and is keyhole shaped. The shoe has a web of 43mm maximum width and lacks calkins or a toe clip. There is no evidence of fullering. The degree of corrosion makes the nailhole count difficult to determine.

A probable iron horseshoe. The toe and one branch survive. Although it may be a result of corrosion the outside edge of the shoe appears to be wavy edged. One side of the shoe is flat, the other slightly curved. The remains of round headed nails are seen in possibly two of the holes, which coincide with the shape of the rim. There are other holes, six in total,  the one at the end of the shoe being elongated, although these are now filled with corrosion products. The size and the wavy rim suggest an eary medival date for this. Dimensions: The surviving part of…

A small wrought iron tongue horseshoe (1700-1815), likely for a pony. The web is relatively wide (max. 32.3mm) with a slightly pointed tongue-shaped aperture and pronounced right-angled calkins at both ends. The shoe does not appear to be fullered and the nail holes are now completely obscured by concretion and corrosion.

A possible Guildhall type draight horse shoe. The two branches are parallel giving an oval opening. Ther are no calkins or toe clip. The number of nail holes, which is probably above seven, may however suggest that it is an early keyhole type shoe, so the possible date range is extended to cover this possibility Dimensions: 115mm wide and 118mm long, the inner width is 58mm and the maximim width of the branches is 35mm

An iron horseshoe dating from the 19th to early 20th century. It is made of wrought iron and is of a heavy cast bar toe clip type, not fullered (grooved) and with calkins at each terminal.  There are four rectangular holes on each side to allow iron nails to attach the shoe to the horse's hoof.  The remains of one of the nails is still in situ.  This horseshoe  is quite heavily corroded and has a mainly dark brown patina. Measurements are; length 198.7mm, width 167.9mm, thickness 35.6mm and weight 1148g. See Sparke (1998) Old Horseshoes, especially page 24…

An iron horseshoe of uncertain age. It is asymmetric, one branch is pointed and one ends in a wide, blunt end. The central shape is a pointed arch.It is too corroded to identify the number of holes present.  It has some of the characteristic shape of a thirteenth century Dove shoe, but it could also date from the eighteenth century, the level of corrosions may suggest an earlier date Dimensions: 130mm long and 120mm wide approximately, it weight 239g

Complete iron horseshoe of modern date (c. AD 1850-1920). With a broadly oval plan and break at its rear end, this horseshoe has a protruding toe-clip at the front and two symmetrical caulkins (downward facing projections) at the rear. Because of universal corrosion no nails or nail holes are visible. The horseshoe has a broadly irregular plan, suggesting that it was handmade. The large size suggests it was worn by a large draught horse. Toe-clips were routinely added to horseshoes after 1850 to add stability to the hoof in the shoe, while caulkins have been a feature of hor…

Iron horseshoe. This is heavily corroded but the inner arch shape can be discerned, and there is the suggestion of two rectangular holes in the front of the shoe. The pointed branch is also apparent. It is likely to be a Guildhall transitional type, dated to AD 1500-50 (Sparkes 1976, 13).

A heavy iron horseshoe of probably medieval origin. It has an arched shaped centre with roughly vertical sides, and the arch is not pointed, which indicates a sixteenth century date. The outside is a more rounded shape. It is not possible to tell if calkins are present, but possibly not. In spite of the heavy corrosion two or three square holes are visible around the perimeter.  Similar to the Dove show shown on page 15 of  Sparkes' Shire Guide to Horseshoes. The dimensions are in accordance with a draught horse shoe of the period Dimensions: 14cm wide, height…

Iron horseshoe. A small wrought iron shoe with features compatible with its assignment to London Type 4, introduced before the end of the 13th century and predominant in London by the 15th century (Clark 1995, 75-123). A curved form tapers towards either end or heel of the shoe to unfolded pointed ends without calkins, with a maximum web width of 30mm. Six rectangular nail holes survive or partially survive, those on one side being partly lost to uneven heavy wear and the largest and most complete hole measuring 8.4mm by 4.8mm. They are not countersunk, but their sides taper inwards fr…

A large "tongue-type" horseshoe of post medieval date (c. end of the 17th to the early 19th century), 156mm in length and 155 wide, probably for a large draught horse. The horseshole is slightly concave and fullered with seven nails on one side and at least five on the other, possibly with further nails going around the toe. The nail heads are subrectangular and convex. The shoe has no toe clip or calkins. The aperture is tongue shaped and around 53mm in maximum width.
