Cast pewter incomplete handle, T-shaped in plan and circular in section, with a grooved edge at the 'head' end, which probably fitted on to the side of a vessel as it is angled to fit the curvature. The opposite end has been compressed and pinched using a crude tool, and this may have pulled the body of the handle into the curve that is it in now. There are also scrapes and gashes caused by later damage from the plough in the soil. There is a casting seam all around the side of the handle, which has not been filed off. There are also linear parallel transverse lines on one side which s…

A cast copper-alloy handle of Medieval or post-Medieval date. The handle has a flattened spatulate terminal that emerges from an upright rectangular-sectioned body, which has an abraded break. It is uncertain what the handle was attached to, and corrosion obscures possible decoration.

Gilt sheet copper alloy fragment of the end of a handle with incised floral decoration with sprays emanating at oblique angles from a central fleuret along to the expanded and rounded terminal of the handle. Some gilding remains in the form of two triangles of gold foil, following the oblique lines of two of the sprays, within the rounded terminal. The decoration looks 17th-century in style, like that seen on buttons and hooked clasps and eyes of the time. Read (2005) illustrates similar examples of this style with fleurets and ring and dot sprays on 17th-century buttons on page…

A bronze drawer handle, of possible Roman date in two parts. One part of the handle is the stud attachment. This is circular in profile with a perforation to take the handle, and has a shank with four concave faces coming off of it. The shank has a further stud on its end that probably was soldered to something, as there is no evidence for a break. The outside of the circular hoop of the stud has a hammer-mark. The stud hoop was presumably wrought into shape to fit the drop handle. The hoop is incomplete on one side, suggesting considerable wear. The handle is sub-triangular…

Copper alloy handle dating to the post medieval period although the design looks Viking in date. The handle is U shaped, and is made of two snakes intertwinning, each end of the handle subsequently has a snakes head curving up. It is decorated with red and yellow enamaling. Where the handle would have joined the vessel, or box there are lugs at the bottom of the snake heads

Copper alloy Roman handle or terminal in the form of a female bust. This terminal is 50.14mm long, of which 27.1mm is the actual bust. It is 11.1mm wide at the widest point, 6.1mm thick and weighs 21.57g. The rendering of the bust is fairly crude. The head is roughly globular. It is just about possible to discern two incised dots that represent the eyes, and a slightly raised area that forms the nose, though this is almost worn smooth. There is a circular depression to either side of the head which probably represent ears. The hairstyle of the female is the same as that commonly seen o…
