A complete cast copper alloy Medieval ewer spout dating from c. AD 1400-1500.  The object is curved, tubular, and zoomorphic in form. The opening at the attachment end is an oval shaped aperture measuring 19.78 mm high by 10.35mm wide. The attachment end, curves upwards to form the spout. The end of the spout is in the form of a stylised dog's head with an open mouth, squared brow, lenticular eyes and rounded droopy ears. The dog’s muzzle forms a broadly cylindrical pouring spout, the opening of which is circular and 11.21mm in diameter. The dogs nose projects…

A foot from a Medieval copper alloy vessel, probably a tripod ewer in the form of a human leg dating c.  AD.1300-1500. The foot is complete and is cast in moulded relief in the form of an armoured lower leg with greave and sabaton covering the foot. At the top, the object is sub-triangular in cross section with slightly convex side edges, the terminal surface where it would be attached to the vessel base is angled down at 45°'s from the front to the back of the leg.  The front and sides of the leg are facetted with six surfaces with…

A complete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic ewer spout dating to the Medieval to Post-Medieval period, c. AD 1400-1600. The ewer is in the form of a stylised animal head, with a spout coming out of its mouth. The rest of the object continues the zoomorphic decoration, however the animal it is depicting cannot be determined. On the back of the ewer is a collection of projections which appear to resemble dorsal fins. On the opposite side of the object, the front feet form a curved trapezoidal platform with moulded digits. This platform could have been used for balancing the bowl. The spout …

A Medieval copper alloy spout from a Ewer. The spout it tubular with the exterior having faceted faces forming a asymmetrical hexagonal face. One terminal appears to be the original terminal and is obliquely angled. The other terminal is broken and has a portion missing from the edge. Protruding from the outer edge of this terminal is a slender rectangular spur with a possible broken terminal. This is possibly a bridging arm from the spout to the body to the ewer. The surface is slightly encrusted and has traces of a light blue- green patina. The spout is 57.5mm long, 17.3mm wide…

A complete copper alloy zoomorphic decorative pouring spout, probably from a ewer of the late medieval period. The spout is hollow and turns in a curve through approximately 90 degrees. The end that would have soldered to the wall of the vessel is scarfed and contoured to fit. The curving neck moulds at its terminal end into a dog's head, with ridged prominent ears, brow, and open mouth. From the mouth a short hollow round tube projects. Such vessel spouts are a common design and are hardly ever found still attached to the vessel - the soldered joint representing a weak spot. A ewer w…

Medieval copper-alloy zoomorphic spout from a ewer. It is a curved tube, circular internally and broadly circular externally, except for the moulded animal (perhaps dog’s) head near the distal end. The head has erect round ears, a snout, and a gaping mouth from which the end of the tube protrudes. The eyes are not illustrated or do not survive. The tube is only very minimally curved as it passes through the head and neck of the animal. However, from approximately the nape of the animal’s neck to the proximal end it curves through nearly ninety degrees. The opening at the b…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval spout from a ewer dating c. AD 1300-1500. The spout is cylindrically crescentic in shape with a concave curve to fit against the body of the vessel and has a hollow interior. Part way along the outer edge is the lower section of a broken flat-sectioned openwork bridge that would have been pierced with a trefoil. This would have connected the upper part of the spout to the neck of the vessel. The surface of the spout is heavily pitted and very worn, with mottled mid green and light brown patination. The spout measures 63mm and is 19mm …

Medieval copper alloy ewer spout, probably of 15th century date The cast zoomorphic ewer spout is in the form of a dog’s head with the spout protruding from the open mouth. The spout is near-complete, with some corrosion (with an overall length of 63.1mm and a weight of 55.1g) and with a perforation near the top, possibly the result of miscasting or possibly to aid pouring. The spout would have been attached to the body of the ewer at the curved and convex oval attachment end (with external dimensions: 43.9mm long and 15.0mm wide). A cast Medieval copper-alloy zoomorphic ewer spout dating from the 15th to 17th centuries. Description: The spout has a zoomorphic head/terminal with two oval raised ears, no clear eyes and a blunt snout. Other elements of the animal's face are picked out in relief. The animal overall looks canine. A pipe extends from the animal's open mouth, through which liquid would have flowed. The spout has a short extent of pipe from the back of the head before it splays outwards and downwards to form a large curved opening, which is where it would have attached (vie solder) to the body of …

A medieval copper alloy ewer spout dating to c AD 1400-1500. The spout is long and curves down to a blunt point with a deep gulley for the liquid. The spout then tapers sharply to become tubular with a stylised moulded dog's head decoration at its terminal. The dog has upright sub-rectangular slightly fluted ears which have a raised rib between them. Its snout and eyes are represented by concave depressions with the circular spout protruding from its open mouth. This is a simple example of a well-known 15th century type and it would originally have been attached to a pedestal base ewe…
