Copper alloy drill bit. Cast round section shank of diameter 6.5mm, slightly expanded at its mid point, with a square section four-sided tapered point of length c.25mm with sharp arises between its faces at one end; and rounded at the other. A probably separate collar is brazed to the latter end; the collar bears deep closely-spaced diagonal cuts all around to enable the bit to be gripped by a turning mechanism. The use of copper alloy would suggest a use in the piercing of thick leather, perhaps for saddlery or related crafts, as from Roman times onwards iron tools would have been us…

An iron drill bit dating to the second or third century AD. The tool is in the form of an elongated trapezoid, which then narrows to form a circular-section stem. Most of the stem is missing due to corrosion. The bolt measures 59mm in length, a maximum of 7mm in width and 6mm in thickness. It weighs 5.5 grams.
It appears to be the detached pyramidal tang of a Humphreys (forthcoming) Type C drill bit. Broad, tapering square-sectioned tangs such as this allowed drill bits to be swapped out for others in a wooden drill stock, and could have been attached to many kinds of drill bit (Ha…

Iron possible drill bit. Wrought iron square section rod which tapers towards a four sided point. The broad end now terminates at a sharply tapered constriction, possibly the stub of a tang as this appears to be incomplete. Now bent near its mid shaft. Suggested date: probably Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.
Length (as found): 181mm, Width/Thickness: 13.1mm, Weight: 95.44gms.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Published
An iron object which has been made from a rectangular shaped iron. Just over half of the iron has been folded lengthways so the long edges meet. The terminal of this folded section is slightly rounded with a slightly expanded edge and a small protrusion. The remaining length of iron is folded, but creates a 'scoop-like' effect where the edges flare out slightly, and the base is curved forming a semi-circular section. The terminal of this 'scooped shape' appears to be broken along an oblique angle.
