An incomplete cast copper alloy seed drill scoop dating to c.AD 1800-1960. The surviving elements of the object is part of the stem and just over half of the scoop bowl. It appears to have been cast from a single mould for the stem and scoop. The handle is roughly rectangular in shape with a rectangular cross section. The surface is covered in a series of filing marks what have angled the surface of the stem around the corners. These file marks continue around the edge of the bowl. It is unclear whether these are decorative. The remains of the bowl present it to have been a deep ci…

Copper alloy seed drill spoon. Cast hemispherical spoon bowl on a thick, tapered and lightly facetted square section shank with bevelled arises, extending to a lightly waisted terminal with a flattened or burred end. This is probably a further example of the working part of a seed drill, objects which were formerly prone to misidentification as 'apothecary spoons' before their true status was recognised and broadcast by Dr Kevin Leahy. A large number of identical spoons would be mounted on a revolving drum, carrying seed from hopper to furrow. The object dates to the period of the Agr…

Copper alloy Seed Drill Spoon. Cast hemispherical spoon bowl mounted on a thick stem of hexagonal section; the latter is worn but retains a mould line along one side. This identification follows advice of Dr Kevin Leahy, as similar objects are sometimes identified as apothecary spoons despite the thickness of the stems. The patination of the object is marked, and not dissimilar to that on Roman objects recovered from the vicinity. A white residue is retained by the bowl, which might hint at its re-use. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900. Length: 38.3mm, Diameter (bowl): 12.8 (t…

Cast copper alloy seed drill scoop, dating to the nineteenth or early twentieth century AD. The bowl and a short length of the stem of the object survive. The bowl and stem have been cast in one piece. The bowl is circular and deep. The handle is circular in cross-section and terminates in a break. File marks can be seen down the sides of the handle and on the upper surface are four small oval depressions. It is unclear if these are intentional decoration. The spoon has a dark green patina. Although it bears some resemblance to a Crummy Type 1 Roman spoon, the stem is rather to large …

Copper alloy. Seed Drill fitting. A cast round spoon bowl at the end of a square-sectioned stem; the stem achieves a round section close to a groove or constriction, at which it is broken. Length: 41.69mm, Diameter of bowl: 19.34mm, Thickness of stem: 7.01mm, Weight: 9.25gms
