Copper alloy cog. Cast wheel with four thin spokes radiating from a rhomboid hub retaining rust from a ferrous metal spindle or axle, and with a serrated outer edge. This might be from a clock mechanism, or from an item of kitchen equipment such as a whisk or a pastry jigger. A copper alloy star shaped object, probably a cogwheel (or gear) dating from the post medieval to modern period, about AD 1800-1950. The object is probably a die-stamped cog wheel. It has six crisp and regular pointed teeth radiating outwards from a central hole. The central hole has a diameter of 3.3mm. One face of the gear is smaller than the other, making it a bevel gear. The cogwheel is possibly part of a clock mechanism. The diameter is 14.3mm, thickness 5.5mm and weight 5.75g. Other cogwheels include NLM-1FF7D6 and NLM-158659.

Copper alloy cog fragment. Cast cogwheel of estimated diameter 30.6mm with a rhomboid hub from which radiated four equidistantly spaced and medially constricted spokes, connecting it to a rim with a series of triangular teeth with wedge-shaped indentations between them. A central hole or socket of diameter 1mm probably received a spindle. Probably from a clockwork mechanism. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 2.36gms

Copper alloy cog. A probably die-stamped cog with sixteen rounded ‘teeth’ projecting from a circular gear wheel with a central aperture of diameter 13mm; the teeth extend further on one side, probably the outward when the object was in place. This is probably from an item of geared hand-operated kitchen equipment, perhaps a whisk or similar. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900 Diameter: 30.5mm, Thickness: 4.2mm, Weight: 11.59gms

Copper alloy cog fragment. About one quarter of a toothed cog wheel with c.2 teeth per external centimetre of its circumference, and with the stubs of two internal radial ribs. The latter bear rust stains where ferrous pins projecting from hemispherical bosses attached the wheel to another component. Polished by wear on one side. From machinery, though whether manually or mechanically powered is uncertain. The resemblance of the form to a seahorse is the entirely fortuitous result of its breakage, perhaps at points of weakness introduced by the proximity of fixing points. Suggested da…

Iron or steel cog. A ferrous metal ring with a series of radial ridges on both sides, probably from a light mechanical device with gear wheels, perhaps culinary equipment. Corroded. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Diameter: 24.1mm, Band width: 5.0mm, Band thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 2.58gms

Copper alloy cogwheel. A probably die-stamped cog with eight pointed teeth, all retaining their crisp outlines, and with a central hole of diameter 4mm. The regular form and the apparent respect for round metric units where its size is concerned may hint at a European origin after c.1800, when Napoleon introduced the Metric System to Continental Europe. Perhaps from a clock or watch mechanism. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1815-1900 Diameter: 13mm, Thickness: 1.2mm, Weight: 0.64gms

Copper alloy gear wheel. A cast discoid plate with twelve spirally radiating points, of which at least two are bent out of their true positions. A central drilled hole of diameter 6.7mm was presumably for a spindle or axle. From machinery, possibly hand-operated: that class of seed drills which occasionally provides detached spoons might be an example of the type of agricultural machinery from which this object may come. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1900. Diameter: 44.8mm, Thickness: 4.5mm, Weight: 25.97gms

Copper alloy cog. A tapered cylinder with a central aperture diminishing from 14.8mm to 11.3mm and with six radiating equidistantly spaced fins of triangular section projecting from it. This appears to have been mounted on a tapered spindle to be involved in a system of gears whose operation or failure has left two adjacent fins distorted at one end. In the context from which it was reported it is most likely this comes from an item of agricultural machinery. The use of a copper alloy for its mechanical components would suggest manufacture in a late pre-industrial setting. Suggested d…

Copper alloy whisk fragment. Cast disc with equidistant hand-cut notches forming a gear wheel, with a three-stage stepped hub through which passes a drawn wire spindle of diameter 2mm and [now] length 19mm. An integrally cast straight-sided handle projects from the wheel and ends in a solid hemispherical knob of diameter 10.6mm, presumably the handle used to operate the implement. A hole of diameter 2mm is drilled through the stem of the handle. This object appears to have been made in a craft rather than an industrial tradition. It is presumably for kitchen use. Fragment of a copper alloy cogwheel or other mechanical part such as a bearing of unknown date. It is semi-circular in shape, having a smooth inside and what appear to be three worn down cog teeth on the outside within a deep recess formed by raised sides. These sides give the piece a wide U shape in section. No parallels can be found as to the function or date of this item. The length is 35mm, the width is 24mm and the weight 11.60g.

Copper alloy Possible Machine Fitting. Fragment from a cast rectangular strip, broken at both ends and bent at one end. An impressed series of semi-circular depressions along both sides of the strip is probably machine-stamped, and appears in negative on the reverse. These appear functional rather than decorative, perhaps engaging a geared mechanism. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1900. Length: 46.9mm, Width: 12.0mm, Thickness: 2.7mm, Weight: 8.34gms.
