Copper alloy casting waste of an unknown date.
Description: The object is rectangular in plan, the upper surface is flat and smooth with an ovoid dome sitting proud on it. The underside is uneven and less cohesive, looking unworked and unmoulded.
Measurements: Length: 20.96 mm: Width: 15.53 mm; Thickness: 12.75 mm and Weight: 22.33 g.
Discussion: This object is likely casting waste due to one side being refined and the others unshapen. It is not possible to date this, due to the lack of diagnostic features.

A fragment of casting waste.
The fragment is a long thin narrow bar but with a slightly irregular form and section being globular at points and sub-rectangular at others. It has a medium green patina.
The object is 93.2mm long, c.10mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 13.66 grams.
The object's irregular form suggests this object may have been the result of the casting process but is not a component part of an object.

A single piece of copper alloy casting waste of uncertain period. The object is irregular in shape being broadly rectangular in plan and domed in cross section but with one flatter region and one more bulbous area. The surface are smooth suggesting an as cast state. The irregularity of the form of this object would suggest this is not an intentional shape such that it is more likely to be the remains of the casting process.
The fragment is a brown green colour

A copper alloy casting jet or casting gate with four projecting runners, from a mould for a late Bronze Age socketed axehead. The upper surface is rough and slanted and the margins are uneven. There are four short spikes / runners projecting from the convex underside; these have lenticular to sub rectangular cross section and are arranged in a rectangle. The surface of the object is coated with thick iron deposits from prolonged exposure to groundwater or river floodwater.
This find is probably associated with the production of socketed axes of South Wales type, which are la…

A probable corroded cast copper alloy casting jet or "gate". The object is roughly sub-trapezoidal in plan with a concave reverse and convex, domed top with two sub-rectangular sprue projections near the top. The surfaces are textured with pits from abrasion. This type of object is the result of casting into a mould and represents waste where molten bronze solidifies at the entrance of the mould around the gate and the casting channel/channels.
Casting waste is difficult to date, and can potentially be prehistoric to post Medieval. The object may be Bronze Age in d…
