A Roman copper alloy terminal in the form of an eagle's head, probably a cart fitting, dating to c AD 43 - 100. It appears to be complete, although the bird is not depicted in full: only the bird's head and upper body are shown. The head is erect and angled slightly right. It is realistically depicted, with moulded circular eyes, brows, and a beak which curves downwards, the upper part separate from the mandible. The bird appears to be holding a small sphere in the end of its beak. The bird's upper body has two small wings, flat oval …

A copper alloy terminal in the form of an eagle's head, probably a cart fitting of Roman date. The terminal is hollow, the attachment end would have originally been circular, it is now bent and broken out of shape. There are two raised moulded lines below the neck of the eagle. These lines are also present on both ends of one of the broken fragment. The terminal is in the shape of an eagle's head, with an object contained in the beak. These are sub circular in shape, one of which is broken. The eagle's features are formed of moulded decoration which depi…

A fragment of cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Roman cart fittings. Description: What remains of the object represents an eagle emerging from a calyx, in three-dimensions. The neck of the bird projects vertically upwards from between the three surviving petals, curving into the forward-facing head. The break below the calys is heavily jagged. Most features of the eagle are obscured by wear and pitting, though the eyes are visible and oval shape with moulded lids and incuse pellet pupils. In the tip of its beak the bird holds a spherical object. The beak is incomplete with a large hol…

Iron possible cart fitting. A wrought iron ring made by the bending of a flat bar of lentoid form, either around a former, or around a straight member of oval section, and with its narrow ends overlapped to produce a narrower but thicker part of a band. The ring ranges in its band width from 17.2mm where the ends cross, to 30mm at the opposite and widest point, with a maximum thickness of 14mm. The mass may suggest good survival of a metal core below a modest degree of corrosion. The inside of the band is smooth, which may suggest the object was deposited wrapped around its setting, w…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman cart fitting, AD.43-200, depicting a stylised human head. The object comprises a cast hollow finial, in the form of a human head. The head is tilted backwards and has a stylised Romano-British face. It is quite worn and much of the exterior detail has been removed. Running down the back of the neck of the piece is an integrally cast squared strap loop, this has a circular cross section. The face of the piece has ovoid eyes and a narrow mouth, the nose appears to have been broad but has been worn away. There is a small hole that pierces the neck near to…

An incomplete, worn and hollow Roman copper-alloy object in the form of an eagle's head. Similar objects have been described as cart fittings although other interpretations are also possible. The eagle's head has cast feathers further delineated by engraved herring-bone lines and there are brow ridges above small eyes. The eagle has an open beak and is holding a small round object with an aperture behind. See also HAMP-E88954; CAM-36A6B7; SOMDOR-1DB306 and BUC-112A77.

The terminal is hollow, the attachment end would have originally been circular, it is now bent and broken out of shape. There is a large worn V shaped break on the back of the head, which runs to the top. There is a circular hole above this, this is possibly due to the break. There are two raised moulded lines around the attachment end. Above this is a thick half circular moulding which collars the head. Part of a Roman copper-alloy cart fitting. The hollow-cast piece takes the form of a three-dimensional representation of an eagle emerging from a calyx. The neck of the bird projects vertically upwards from between the two surviving petals, curving into the forward-facing head. Much of the front part of the neck has been lost in antiquity, but that which remains displays three rows of moulded feathers, the upper of which projects outwards on either side. An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman terminal in the form of an eagle's head, probably a cart fitting of first century date. The head is realistically rendered with feathers delineated both by moulding and incisions. The eye is moulded as are the large brow ridges. At the back of the head are two sub-rectangular moulded panels that extand backwards down the back of the eagle's head and terminate in a small sharp triangular projection - these may represent head and neck feathers that are lying flat on the bird's head. A small spherical object is grasped within the eagle's open be…

A cast copper-alloy cart fitting terminal of Roman date. The terminal is formed in the shape of an eagle's head, the beak apart holding a spherical pellet between the tips of the beak. The eyes are clearly formed and the terminal has been cast to form pronounced brow ridges over the eyes. Small patches of dried mud and corrosion products prevent the original surface of the artefact from being seen clearly. Despite this it looks likely that the surface may have been detailed with fine incised or moulded lines that formed the outline of the representation of feathers. This detail is pre…

Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman terret ring, a platform decorated type, dating to the 1st century AD. It has a cast-in-one copper alloy bar which is thinner and rectangular in section, compared to the hoop. The hoop when complete would have been sub-circular in plan with three flattened oval discs attached, one at the top and two at the sides. Less than half of the hoop remains, with just one disc/platform which has been enamelled with a central blue dot, surrounded by red. The disc measures 9.04mm, by 12.25 mm. The hoop has a circular cross section until the first platform/…

Cart fitting Large copper alloy pin with tapering conical shaft and balustered head, with an incised line around the circumference of the pin at the base of the head. Possibly the terminal of a copper alloy and iron linch pin, although the long tapering copper alloy pin would be unusual. One side of the pin is heavily encrusted with iron corrosion, supporting the suggestion that this formed part of a larger object which included iron components. Parallels: This type of pin is most closely paralleled by Palk's (1992) Type IIa (Iron linch pins with baluster-headed copper alloy …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman terminal in the form of an eagle's head emerging from a tubular sleeve. The object is hollow except for the solid beak. It measures 49.51mm in length, 22.16mm in max.width and 47.22mm in depth from the beak to the back of the sleeve. The object weighs 66.22g. It is missing part of one side of the head and sleeve (old damage). Projecting inside the head from the outside at the top are two lengths of sheet metal bending in opposite directions, presumably fixing strips. They are c.3mm wide and the longest is perhaps 14mm, although it is not possibl…

A cast copper-alloy socketed terminal of Roman date. The lower two thirds of the artefact comprise a hollow, circular-sectioned socket, the diameter of which gradually decreases towards the top. A moulded collar extends around the damaged basal opening, where there are the remnants of two opposing rivet holes. At the front of the object, just above the opening, is a probable piercing; on the inside, at the same point as this piercing, is what appears to be a circular rivet stop. It seems likely that, as with many of the parallels for this piece (see discussion below), a hooked atta…

Large fragment of an enamelled cast cu-alloy terret ring probably dating from the late 1st or early 2nd century AD. This terret ring is unusual in so far that the ring section is flattened rather than circular as it normally is. The surface and especially the breaks of the terret are very worn, but most of the enamel is still in place. There is a large circular central motif with concentric enamelled (probably red) circules. The central ornament is flanked by two crescent-shaped mouldings. Adam Gwilt from the National Museums and Galleries of Wales adds: "There are similar concentric …

A worn copper alloy hook-shaped terminal of Roman date, probably from a cart fitting. The terminal is circular in section and in the shape of a bird's head, perhaps a swan, that has an elongated beak (which is slightly up-turned)with pointed tip, and almond-shaped eyes on the sides of the head. The neck of the swan curves at an angle of ninety degrees and expands towards an old break where it would have presumably been attached to a more substantial cart fitting. This example is pitted in places and with a dark green/brown patina. Similar cart fittings have been recorded on the PAS da…
