A similar, solid, possible gaming piece has been found at Long Melford, Suffolk see SF-C01997, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgehsire see SF-50B784, and two hollow very simliar examples have also been found at Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, see SF-6F5256 and SF-6F7361. An alternative function of these objects would have been as weights rather than gaming pieces. Height: 18.94mm …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead powder flask cap. A small cylindrical vessel with thickened rim, now squashed closed. A small loop is flattened against the lower side, for strung attachment to the flask. A vertical strengthening rib appears on one side of the lid, with a mould line opposite. Patinated. The smaller of two similar objects presented together. This is the cap from a powder flask. A powder flask might be used singly by a sportsman or might be carried on a bandolier as one of the ‘twelve apostles’ to equip a musketeer. It held a single measured charge. Lead spindle whorl, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Moulded decoration on one side comprises thirteen or fourteen rays, some converging with their neighbours to form the points of an irregular and incomplete star, and with [usually] a single pellet in each of the compartments so defined. The other side appears to bear fewer lines and pellets in pairs. A moulded circumferential rib marks the meeting of the two halves. Crushed on one side with consequent local distortion. Patinated. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven surface with off-centre dimple and a flat base; perhaps cast in an open mould suggesting the flat side to have been uppermost at the time of fabrication. Opposed pairs of nicks appear on the flat side. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting its relatively recent date. Though a weight close to this mass was reported from the London waterfront (Egan 1998, table 15) though it was not thought to respect any prevailing standard. This object might alternatively represent one and a half averdepois ounces, perhaps as a homemade weight for the k…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven upper surface on which appear straight lines moulded in bold relief. The lines may represent two separate arrowhead forms or perhaps an untidy monogram including letter forms resembling M and V. On the base – or the top as cast in an open mould - there is a central dimple with a crudely incised triangle around it. Patinated. The combination of relief features, dimple and incised base recur in medieval London (e.g. Egan 1998 fig. 233 no. 993, see also no. 990) where they may respect a medieval standard (ibid. table 15), and were poss…

The token is sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in cross section (it has a domed decorative obverse and flat reverse). The obverse consists of a small cross within a concentric circle. These patterns most likely represent powell type 14 (crosses) and powell type 31 (circular geometric). The reverse is flat and undecorated. The inscription reads: + S' WILLI.SI R.I . The "S'WILLI" which translates as the seal of William, suggests this is a personal seal but the second part is less certain, likely to be a surname,…

Lead alloy button copy. Cast plano-convex uniform button front bearing a Crown Imperial above a bugle with the number 20 between these features, and with a now-crescentic basal legend which probably extended round the button retaining the letters [--]TEERS [--]. This would seem to be the relict of the word Volunteers. There is no trace of a loop or its loss on a featureless smooth back. This is probably a casting taken from a 19th-century military uniform button. What is described above may suggest this to be from the periods of recruitment of volunteer or yeomanry regiments to defend …
