Iron spanner, as kindly suggested by the finder. A large wrought iron object with a passing resemblance to an outsize key. The ‘bow’ is of angular quatrefoil form with concave faces between straighter edges; the stem is of rectangular section, and terminates in an E-shaped ‘bit’ with angular sides to its central leg and rounded outer edges to the others. The finder, a farmer, kindly suggests this is a 19th-century spanner for the removal of a wheel hub, though the distinct configurations at either end may hint at a range of related functions. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 180…

Lead
Weight. Cast shield-shaped weight bearing motif of a crudely modelled lion rampant right at centre of an inner raised shield-shaped field; a central rib connects the larger ‘back’ and inner or ‘front’ fields. The lion motif is one of a series of ‘standard’ types; the weight approaches that defined used for measurement based on the avoirdupois pound from the 13th century to, perhaps, the early 15th century – the closest weight in the proposed series being 113 grams (Biggs and Withers 2000, 34-45). Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1400.

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with an erotic scene depicted in relief on one side. This involves two naked figures: a young man to the left and another party of indeterminate gender to the right. The young man crouches with knees flexed as he thrusts a long rod with a slightly swollen mid part into the rear of the other figure, who is bent over with flexed knee to receive it in the hindquarters; the latter participant may be looking back towards its companion, perhaps contributing to a pointed appearance of the head. One arm, the left, is crooked behind the figure's back, p…

Lead weight. Cast flat discoid weight. One side bears the low relief motif of a long cross with three well separated pellets in each angle; the other bears a central bar with a lug, which bears a passing and probably coincidental resemblance to the modern numeral 1. The former design relates this piece to the similar reverse of silver pennies introduced for the voided long cross coinage from the mid 13th century. The mass indicates this to represent a [slightly overweight] shilling of twelve pennies according to the Tower weight system. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1340.

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with a depressed upper face with lathe-turned lines as a border and bearing inspection counter-stamps of a cinquefoil and an open crown. The crown may have been the mark of the Grocer's Company from the 15th century. Despite having been checked twice, the mass indicates this to be an underweight quarter of an averdepois ounce - a value kindly suggested by the finder, though it is closer to two [overweight] drachms of 3.41gms. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Lead weight. Cast prism-shaped weight of rectangular section and lentoid profile, with a probably drilled transverse apical suspension hole of diameter 3mm. Lightly gouged at its base, both in antiquity [unless this is a casting flaw] and more recently. Patinated. This might represent one [slightly overweight] half mark (of 124.4gms) by the English Tower system, which was used to weigh both silver and bread. A use as a steelyard poise could also be permitted by the hole. Suggested date: Medieval, 1150-1300
