Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stone hone of unknown date. The sub-rectangular hone is slightly waisted in the centre and is probably incomplete. It is made from a brown hard mud or siltstone with fine grains and is smooth to touch. The sides of the hone have silvery inclusions and black markings that are not present on the front or back face. The hone tapers in thickness at one end and has a circular perforation (diameter is 5.5mm) that has been drilled from both faces. One face has much more wear than the other with worn grooves and marks. The surviving length is 90.8mm, the width is 33.3mm, the thickness is 20.…

Fine-grained compacted Sandstone, whetstone. A short bar hone of originally rectangular section, reduced to oval section towards one end by heavy wear. All four sides are lightly dished towards their centre by this use. The flat ends suggest the object is complete. Lead Weight. Cast elongated Shield-Shaped Weight, with a possibly moulded rim on its upper side and a dimple on the reverse. Roughly incised vertical lines on the upper face may represent crude decoration, though damage is equally possible. A pair of holes of diameter 4.5mm have been drilled through the object from the back, and may have been intended to facilitate tied attachment or suspension, perhaps indicating reuse, as for fishing. Patinated overall, including the drilled holes. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1450. Length: 63mm, Width: 35.9mm, Thickness: 13.6mm, Weight: 163.56gms.

Lead fishing line weight. Neatly cast flat tapered weight with curved top and an apical perforation of diameter 1.8mm apparently drilled from both sides, an operation which has left the edges of the aperture lightly countersunk. Patinated overall. The form resembles that of larger stone sinkers used with nets along the River Thames and its tributaries. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Copper alloy Weight. Cast rectangular weight with sharp arises between its six faces. Lead weight. Cast plano-convex weight. The surface is pitted which may suggest difficulty in casting, corrosion or perhaps exposure to heat. The form relates this object to a series of early medieval weights - and some possible playing pieces - reported from the region. The mass is twice that of a drum shaped flat-based casting from Flixborough which is itself suggested (Wastling 2009, page 424, no. 3286) to have represented two units of measurement. Alternatively, this may have represented eight units of one of the Viking Age systems: a Scandinavian one based on units of 4.07gms and …

Lead weight. Cast weight of waisted or dumbbell form, resembling that of a cotton reel or bobbin, with a thick cylindrical shank between expanded plano-convex ends. Lightly patinated. Weights of this form have been noted in the East Riding at Newbald Lodge, and are occasionally reported from northern Lincolnshire. A Roman date is usually suggested; probably, as here, because of the predominantly Roman finds with which these seem to be associated. Their purpose remains unknown. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 40.4mm, Length: 39.1mm, Weight: c.350gms

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid concavo-convex weight with rounded side and narrow rim; a central raised spot in the internal surface suggests the object was finished on a lathe. Very worn. The mass suggests this to have represented one [now slightly underweight] averdepois ounce; however, the rounded as opposed to straight form of the sides may open the possibility of a Roman date, representing one uncia [of 27.3gms] to which the current mass is closer. Lead weight. Cast drum-shaped weight with a probably drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, positioned slightly off centre. Patinated. The form is usually taken to indicate a medieval line weight by this reporter, however, there is abundant early medieval material and scant medieval material associated with this object, so an earlier date is here suggested. Copper alloy weight. Blank disc, probably too perfectly round to be admitted as a hammered coin, but presented as one along with eight Roman coins. Lead Weight. Cast discoid object with an off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 7mm. Patinated overall. The aperture size would permit an interpretation as an early medieval spindle whorl, while the mass might permit this to have functioned as a weight representing six Scandinavian units of 4.07gms for use in a bullion economy: equating to a putative Viking ounce of c.24gms. A similar weight from Hatcliffe, NE Lincolnshire, has been recorded and is ascribed an early medieval or medieval date: NLM-CE52A0. The form is, however, unusual for either artefact class in the Early Medieval pe…

Lead Weight. Cast conical weight with a foot ring 3mm high and a moulded central hole tapering in its diameter from 8.5mm to 3.5mm. The outside of the cone may be lightly facetted, though this might merely be an effect of cooling in the mould. Patinated overall and dented on one side. The mass may suggest this to have represented 10 Viking Age units for the measurement of silver bullion (on a Scandinavian module of 4.07gms or a Viking Dublin module of 4.43gms; the match is now very close to the former). The form recalls that of a pyramidal weight of comparable mass suggested to have s…

Lead Weight. Cast discoid weight with flat upper and lower sides and a bevelled edge. A finely incised line runs across the centra of the top (smaller) face. Patinated overall. The mass suggests this may represent 20 Viking Age Scandinavian units of 4.07mm, as used for the weighing of silver bullion. This would be towards the upper end of the series of weights of this type so far reported. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Diameter: 34.4mm, Thickness: 9.0mm, Weight: 81.68gms.

Lead Weight. Cast discoid weight. The sides appear to bear a series of vertical notches, either to improve grip when manipulating the object or, more likely, to distinguish it from others. The mass slightly exceeds that of a notional Viking age ounce of 24gms, or could represent a slightly underweight six units according to the Viking Dublin scale based on modules of 4.47gms, or, more closely, a slightly overweight six units of the contemporary Scandinavian scheme used for bullion transactions. Lead weight. Cast annular weight of plano-convex form with four symmetrically distributed rounded trapezoid bosses on the convex side and a round central moulded aperture of diameter 11mm.
