Iron spanner, as kindly suggested by the finder. A large wrought iron object with a passing resemblance to an outsize key. The ‘bow’ is of angular quatrefoil form with concave faces between straighter edges; the stem is of rectangular section, and terminates in an E-shaped ‘bit’ with angular sides to its central leg and rounded outer edges to the others. The finder, a farmer, kindly suggests this is a 19th-century spanner for the removal of a wheel hub, though the distinct configurations at either end may hint at a range of related functions. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 180…

Copper alloy wire. A length of drawn wire with angled sheared ends. The finder kindly suggests this to be a post-medieval clasp, citing Read 2008 page 142 nos 557-558, though this reporter would rather see it as, at best, an improvised version rather than one of these more neatly 'knotted' forms. Two glass wine bottle fragments. Blueish and greenish iridescent shards, probably from the bases of two wine or champagne bottles with pronounced punts; one from the edge of the base, and the other probably from the side of the punt. Both fragments are decayed to a similar degree, suggesting them to be broadly contemporary, and having shared a similar burial environment. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Weight: 46.69gms.

Glass wine bottle. Shard from the basal punt of a wine or champagne bottle. The glass, of a green tint, shows iridescence from its decay. Green translucent glass bottle fragment. Moulded oval-ended base of a punt from a wine or champagne bottle, with distinctive golden iridescence on the external surface and across fracture surfaces, but eroded from the inner surface. The glass lacks discernible bubbles within the metal, and is therefore likely to be an industrial product of relatively recent date. The identification arises from the slight return of the angle of the punt, visible at its edges. The use of tinted glass was particularly important to retain the colour of red wines, while a punt helped collect sediment so cl…

Dark [probably] green glass with all surfaces coated with golden iridescent decay products; wine bottle fragment. A small shard from the basal punt of a large [with an estimated basal diameter probably exceeding 200mm] wine or champagne bottle, presumably broken in antiquity. The extent of decay may suggest the glass to be an earlier rather than a later industrial product. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Thickness: 8.2mm, Height (punt): c.50mm, Weight: 39.62gms
