Iron spanner, as kindly suggested by the finder. A large wrought iron object with a passing resemblance to an outsize key. The ‘bow’ is of angular quatrefoil form with concave faces between straighter edges; the stem is of rectangular section, and terminates in an E-shaped ‘bit’ with angular sides to its central leg and rounded outer edges to the others. The finder, a farmer, kindly suggests this is a 19th-century spanner for the removal of a wheel hub, though the distinct configurations at either end may hint at a range of related functions. Green translucent glass bottle fragment. Moulded oval-ended base of a punt from a wine or champagne bottle, with distinctive golden iridescence on the external surface and across fracture surfaces, but eroded from the inner surface. The glass lacks discernible bubbles within the metal, and is therefore likely to be an industrial product of relatively recent date.
