Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Possible mount fragment. Cast strip of copper alloy, now slightly expanded at one end. All edges are broken and both surfaces pitted with corrosion, so the identification offered is necessarily speculative. The finder kindly suggests this may be a strap end, an inference from the shape of the object; however, no provision for attachment remains. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800. Length: 26.6mm, Width: 9.8mm, Thickness: 2.5mm, Weight: 2.51gms.

Silver Finger ring. Band of very slightly plano-convex section bearing faint traces of worn vertical and horizontally inscribed decoration, perhaps the remnant of a billeted scheme. The band is broken although complete. The finder suggests an Anglo-Saxon date, though finger rings dated to the Early Medieval period with such a scheme as is suspected here are more massive than this example. Suggested date: Unknown, 1600-1900. This reporter considers a lack of assured and diagnostic detail precludes such dating as would be required to embark on a Treasure process. Internal diameter: …

Copper alloy Buckle. Cast curved or kidney-shaped frame with rectangular strap attachment. The object is flat-backed, with surfaces curving towards a sharp aris enclosed within the frame; in effect it is of triangular section. The buckle form is noted at South Shields Fort and in other military contexts. However, a later date is also possible: a slightly larger buckle of this form from London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 472) has been compared to Roman finds, but also to a girdle buckle from a Later Medieval woman's burial. Rob Webley kindly comments: 'I take the point here abo…

Copper alloy strap fitting with one side slightly narrower (3mm) than the other three (4.5mm). Length: 34mm, Width: 21.47mm. Weight: 4.9gms. Initially kindly identified as Roman by John Creighton. Helen Geake kindly comments as follows; 'Do you think this might instead be a medieval buckle frame? Filemarks are very common in the medieval period. For comparisons, see BH-5DF483, SF8357, SF7896.'. This reporter would find it invidious to favour one of these authorities over the other, and so a broader date range is now advanced. Suggested date: Unknown Roman to Medieval, 43-1500.

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy ring. Cast ring of near-circular section. This simple object appears in good condition, which might commend a relatively recent date. It is of originally rounded rather than angular section, which distinguishes it from the common class of medieval 'harness rings'. Horsegear of the Iron Age or chariot fittings of the Late Iron Age might include such items, though they are perhaps more often optimistically ascribed to these earlier periods. Within the very broad date range suggested, a Medieval date is perhaps less likely than the earlier or later eras. Suggested date: Unkn…
