Iron chain links. Two oval chain links of wrought iron, of apparently rectangular section. Each link is narrowed by wear at its ends. The links are also slightly bowed, apparently in alternating directions which suggests this is a deliberate aspect of construction rather than damage arising from wear. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Length (both links): 107.61mm, Width: 33.4mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 30.87gms

Iron Object, function unknown. Flat sub-triangular fragment; this object lacks the V-section which would indicate it to be part of a blade. In relatively uncorroded condition so possibly steel rather than iron. Suggested date: Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800. Length: 33.1mm, Width: 24.2mm, Thickness: 4.2mm, Weight: 11.57gms.

Iron and Mortar Possible Metal Working Debris. A small lump of dense vesicular material, identified by the finder as a mortar, with a pellet and bubbled trail of iron slag trapped within it. This reporter suggests the object may derive from ironworking, though whether from a smithy or an iron making furnace is uncertain. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800. Wrought Iron. Nail. Square headed nail with a tapering shank of rectangular section; the tip is lost. As a hand-made blacksmith's product, it is uncertain whether this object should be ascribed to Roman, Medieval or later activity. The condition of the object is good for a field find, and may suggest local conditions favouring the preservation of ferrous materials. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800. Length: 10mm, Width (head): 30mm, Thickness (shank - maximum): 15mm, Weight: 86.46gms.

Iron unidentified and undated object. A sub-triangular object with a single projecting shank at one end, and with a surface which appears bubbled overall. Probably wrought iron chain link. An elongated oval link, probably worn or flattened at one end. The object appears to have been made by bending a square section rod, though this appearance could arise from the delamination of corroding metal. Iron hammer head. Wrought iron hammer head with an oval shaft hole of length 23mm and width 15mm between a slightly waisted and markedly flattened peen or striking surface and a triangular profile blade. The striking surface is heavily burred. The surface of the object has begun to delaminate, to a degree which may argue some antiquity, but in itself a process which may deceptively exaggerate the angularity of its appearance. The present stepped profile of the object is reminiscent of an 11th-century illustration depicting a smith at work (Leahy 2003, Anglo-Saxon Crafts, Tempus, …

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire

Iron axehead. Wrought iron axehead with flat back, rounded cheeks and a flared blade with a crescentic cutting edge. The blade is constructed with layers of iron beaten together in a union which has failed, perhaps at a chip on one corner of the blade, resulting in a leaf of metal curling back from the edge. This flaw must place the object in a pre-industrial craft setting, though the longevity of the forms of hand tools must leave a broad date range open. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Length: 155mm, Width: 86mm, Thickness: 30mm.

Iron possible knife fragment. Wrought iron blade, possibly from a small whittle tang knife (tang lost), with a curved cutting edge and a very slightly angled back. Alternatively this may be from a broken pair of scissors. The curvature of the cutting edge is presumably exaggerated by sharpening in antiquity. The V-section to be expected of a knife blade is not particularly marked. More perplexing, the metal is in good condition, as if sealed or protected from corrosion, perhaps by a sympathetic burial environment; the finder indicates the object has not been treated. Iron metalworking debris. A small bubbled fragment of possible tapping slag with a flat surface suggesting it has solidified on a flat surface; one end of the fragment is lifted, and may be where it was poured or spilled. This was reported together with broken iron objects, and may suggest ferrous metalworking in the vicinity. An early medieval or medieval date has tentatively been suggested for those objects reported together with this one, though there is no evidence for the quantities of waste material to be expected from a focus of industrial activity. Suggested date: Unknown, pos…

Iron possible axe head fragment. A wrought iron object of longitudinal V-section with a rounded narrower end, possibly the cutting edge of its blade, and sides which converge towards a thicker back. Viewed in profile the object appears slightly bent. It is uncertain whether the full extent of the putative blade remains, in which case this would have been a small axe for carpentry. Alternatively, this may be the tip of a longer blade. The putative cutting edge is now of crescentic form. The mass may imply the extensive survival of metal below corrosion. Iron tanged spatulate implement. Wrought iron round ended spatulate blade of length 56mm with a tang of length 27mm, probably broken, aligned with the back edge of the blade. Though what might correspond to a cutting edge is angled, this could be a quirk of corrosion or cleaning and the blade as a whole lacks both the V section which would indicate a knife, and the further modification of the form of its blade from recurrent sharpening. A range of spatulate tools and implements are known from Early Medieval and Medieval contexts. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval, 60…
