Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy disc fragment. About one quarter of a thin flat discoid object. A possible plain flat rim appears on one side; the other is now entirely plain. The reduction of the object to a quartile would seem difficult to achieve with a copper alloy coin unless it were very fiercely worn before a break was attempted. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800 Diameter (inferred): 28.5mm, Thickness (at rim): 1.5mm, Weight: 1.47gms

Copper alloy disc. A small disc with a small part of its edge turned over and surface detail now lost, perhaps to an episode of intense burning. The bent edge makes it seem unlikely this was a coin, though the size might be apt to low base metal denominations or tokens any time between the later Roman period (c.AD260 onwards) and the last modern issues of farthings in the mid-20th century. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Roman to Modern, 260-1950 Diameter: 20.1mm, Thickness: 2.1mm, Weight: 3.98gms

Lead possible weight fragment. Cast weight with an upstanding rim which takes the thickness where it occurs to c.9mm, broken with the loss of one side or end; patinated. A pair of deep triangular gouges on the flat underside may be a deliberate marking. It is uncertain whether the original form was sub-rectangular or discoid, the latter being more common. The uncertain extent of loss vitiates any correspondence with known or suspected standards. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1750. Length: 36.2mm, Width: 38.8mm, Thickness (clear of rim): 8mm, Weight: 65.91gms

County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
White heavily patinated flint with cortex, probably from Glacial Drift, possibly a fragment of debitage reworked as a muller or grinder. A small sub-rectangular and handy block with crystalline fracturing along all its arises. The flint has been very roughly trimmed by two or three strokes of abrupt hard hammer working in antiquity; such rough work is typical of the Bronze Age. It was then probably abandoned, as subsequent grinding appears to post-date the formation of a dense white patina on all exposed surfaces. This later use seems to have been to grind material with the considerab…

Copper alloy mount. Cast concavo-convex figurative mount representing the naturalistically rendered maned mask of a lion. A tousled mane surrounds a feline face with rounded features, round eyes and small ears, with a ‘beard’ below the mouth. The eyes are round with pupils modelled – one brow is lowered, though the slightly quizzical effect might be the result of a minor abrasion rather than imaginative modelling. Extensive traces of white metal plating are trapped in the modelled detail of the display side. The back is hollowed and rounded, though the casting still a…

Copper alloy seed drill spoon. A small cast spoon with a rounded bowl with a flat border and a low concave centre, with a lightly tapered stem of lentoid or rhomboid section. It is suggested this may be a small version of a spoon from the rotating mechanism of a seed drill, where multiple spoons mounted on a drum would take seeds from a hopper. Seed drill spoons are more usually larger, more robust and with bowls of hemispherical form. This may be from an earlier, and possibly man-portable and hand-operated, version of drill.
