Stone rubber. An irregular cobble of fine grained tan coloured compacted sandstone, smoothed by water which has exposed natural bedding planes, and probably also by use-wear and handling. One end is flattened and the form of this stone lends itself to a grip between thumb and forefinger if the flat face were to be used. This belongs to a series of improvised rubbers and smoothers whose currency was probably catholic, but which are especially associated with contexts dated to between the Later Iron Age and the Early Medieval period.
