Copper alloy and iron brooch. Small cast hinged Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 5.b. Plain cylindrical wings clenched behind retain an iron axis bar for a hinged pin [lost] and are clasped by a small bow of rounded oval section with a step at the top and a central billeted longitudinal strip. The bow tapers to a plain foot; catch plate lost. The surface is possibly darkened by treatment with oil by the finder. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-150

A small leaf-shaped iron blade fragment [tip lost] with a backing of thin copper alloy which appears to extend from the broken stub of a handle with an angled outer end and a low rib on one side; the loss of a counterpart is presumed. This might be from a pair of embroidery scissors, as most sets of shears for heavy duty tasks were made entirely of iron and are larger. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800

Copper alloy and textile strap end. A pair of plates or a single plate folded lengthways with an ogival outer end and a rivet hole of diameter 1.6mm at its inner end, which was probably engrailed. A further rivet at the front end was only noted during image processing. Woven fabric, now of a buff tint, remains trapped between the plates. This might point to a later medieval date within the available range as sumptuary laws enacted following the Black Death, particularly the Statute of 1369, restricted the wearing of leather straps by the lesser sort. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400…
