Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast great square headed brooch retaining the head plate and mid-bow; foot lost. A trapezoid head plate bears a rhomboid projection at either corner, with three zones of rouletted or stamped ornament between the rhomboids as an outer order. The rhomboid pprojections are coated in white metal. A square frame of two orders with possibly stamped texture confines a small central field of Salin Style 1 ornament, with a pellet or eye at its top right-hand corner. The head plate is abutted by a four-sided pyramidal mid-bow boss with projecting solid cylindrical l…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount. Cast oval plate with four teardrop-shaped hollows on its display side, one now open, and with the stubs of three integrally cast prongs on the back. The integral prongs would usually point to a post-medieval date. However, the reddish cast to the metal, the worn surface condition and the – for that later period – unusual form may rather point to an Anglo-Scandinavian context for this object. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy and iron stirrup mount. Cast sub-triangular copper alloy plate with a thick stepped basal flange projecting at an oblique angle. The copper alloy plate bears symmetrical moulded decoration in a sunken field, Williams Class A Type 2B, possibly representing two beasts facing each other and looking upwards at a globe which may itself depend from moulded strips below the apical trefoil top, which is spurred to achieve that form. Three heavy iron fixing pins pass through the plate at its apex and towards either bottom corner. This type is most commonly reported – three ex…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast concavo-convex mid-bow moulding from a cruciform brooch, bubbled and pitted by intense heat, possibly with ridges or stops at one end. Possibly joining with no. 11 above, which it was presented with, but more heavily damaged and so possibly from a different brooch which has suffered a similar fate. Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a cruciform brooch, from below the mid-bow, which is evidenced by the turned-up end of this fragment. Below this, incised paired lines limit a plain field with a triple moulded collar below it. This in turn gives way to a possibly human mask with brows and a basal pair of slightly expanded nostrils. It is possible that human and equine masks were combined at this terminal. The stub of an integrally cast catch plate remains behind the upper part of the fragment. The back of the object is slightly concave below the catch plate. The su…

Copper alloy and iron mount. Cast copper alloy plate with concentric moulded decoration, of thickness 1.8mm at its outer edge. The decoration comprises, described from the centre outwards: a plain flat central boss, a gutter separating the boss from a thin and possibly cabled strand and continuing beyond it; a thicker cabled band in a gutter with a further narrow strand beyond it; and finally a plain flat border. Gilding traces are trapped in the relief of the decoration. The back bears the corroded stub of a ferrous metal fixing pin. Suggested date: probably Early Medieval, 410-850

Copper alloy buckle. A massy cast D-shaped buckle with an expanded and thickened textured outer edge with a broad grooved collar towards either end and a narrowed strap bar whose ends are grasped by biting beast heads; the centre of the strap bar is notched to receive a pin [lost]. This is a somewhat massier version of a buckle form usually ascribed to the 11th century. A wider date range is offered with deference to its atypical features. Copper alloy girdle hanger. Cast E-shaped plate with slightly concave outer edges and a longer central stalk, broken at its upper end. A series of semi-circular stamps, each arc enclosing a dot and so resembling halved ring-and-dot, passes along the outer borders of the central stalk, follows the edges of the troughs on either side, and ascends the inner side of the outer elements. The series also runs intermittently on the outer sides of the latter. Extensive traces of white metal plating were observed during image processing. The girdle hanger was part of an object suite associated w…
