Copper alloy and wood possible parasol fitting or ferrule. A tapered flat-ended conical sheet metal sheath in which a fragment of round-section rod or dowel [0f diameter 5.8mm] remains preserved. Objects of similar size and character - reported frequently from Scawby, North Lincolnshire, but also from other locations - may be the tips from the ribs of a parasol or umbrella. This could explain why they are relatively common: a single discarded parasol could yield numerous detached ferrules as its organic components decayed or fragmented.
