Copper alloy brooch. Cast trumpet brooch, Mackreth type TR 1.x3 (especially pl. 83 no. 5247). A plain trumpet head has the stub of an integrally cast loop or tab on its top, and a loop behind to retain fastening gear [lost]. The bow is then slightly constricted before an equally slight expansion over a possibly eroded moulding, and a more definite mid bow moulding which, like the others, does not pass all around the bow. There is the suspicion of a horizontal groove between this and another vaguely defined moulding after which the lower bow tapers once again. The foot is lost, though …

Copper alloy brooch. Cast bow and fantail brooch, cf. Mackreth type CD H 7.a. A plain tubular case, clenched behind, retains an axis bar, possibly iron, for a hinged pin [lost]. The wings are clasped by a bow of rounded section, which tapers gently to a V-shaped end. Here, there are a pair of moulded ridges or stops. Below these, the foot expands as a fantail with a central triangular ridge, and with a rhomboid stud standing proud of its apex between the ridges noted above. The stub of a catch plate runs down the middle of the back of the foot. Suggested date: Early Roman, 60-125 Leng…

Copper alloy strap end fragment. A cast straight-sided plate with a split end bearing a single rivet of diameter 2.1mm and length 2.5mm in a drilled hole to attach the plates to the strap [lost], cf. Thomas Class E type 4, of Borre style. The plate bears a bordered panel of interlace comprising roughly symmetrical loops and strands, with grouped bars at the base of the design, possibly appended to an anthropomorphic design. Copper alloy mount. Cast plate in the form of a thin seated cat with pricked triangular ears and an angled tail; a single integrally cast fixing pin of length 4mm projects at an angle from the back. The muzzle is rendered in low pyramidal relief and there is a discernible bevel around the back of the object. The style seems peculiarly reminiscent of the street cats featured in later 19th-century poster art generated by the French Impressionist school, a feature which encourages a much later date range than the form of the object or the method of its attachment alone might suggest. Copper alloy spoon fragment. Cast stem and terminal from a seal top spoon. The stem is of facetted hexagonal section with slight indications of transverse file or chatter marks, possibly keying for extensive white metal plating. The baluster shaped terminal comprises four distinct rounded mouldings and a plain flat top, while at the other end the stem expands as it approaches the bowl [now lost]. The use of both copper alloy and white metal plating for a spoon may suggest this to have been made as the control of craft guilds over manufactures was waning, as both the material and its su…
