Ceramic building material. Buff reduced fabric with occasional calcareous inclusions [rock] to length 4mm. Handmade roof tile fragment with one straight edge, and with the imprints of a sanded surface on its underside where the green or unfired tile was laid, and either glaze or vitrification traces on the smoothed upper surface. Miniature wheel thrown-vessel, in the form of a jug with plain rim – no pouring spout – and with a biconical body with expanded pedestal base [turning lines on base] and with an applied corrugated strap handle with a trefoil lower end. Dark-stained on one side, chipped at rim. Probably a tourist souvenir from the Mediterranean. The finder kindly reports that Roman material was discovered when nearby houses were built [on Roman Way], and miniature vessels were used in the Roman period, especially as grave…

Object type: DRAIN PIPE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Ceramic building material. Oxidised fabric with occasional calcareous inclusions to length 3mm, a sherd of concavo-convex form with dark staining on the inner concave side. This may point to an origin in a drainpipe or land drain tile. The latter were purpose-made from the 1840s, when extrusion machines for brickyard use were introduced, making the forming of tubular tiles possible. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1840-1900
Length: 88mm, Width: 54mm, Thickness: 17.5mm, Weight: 89.90gms

Record ID: NLM-47E77E
Object type: ROOF TILE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Ceramic building material: roof tile fragment. Pale oxidised dense sandy fabric with slightly duller or reduced margins, broken on all sides. The lower surface as formed is roughened by contact with a coarsely sanded and possibly straw-strewn surface, while the upper surface is smoothed by hand or by a striking-off baton. The thickness and evidence for the forming of the green or unfired tile are consistent with a medieval date, albeit the greater part of accompanying ceramic is Roman. Suggested date: probably Medieval, 1200-1500
