Object type: ROOF TILE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Ceramic building material: roof tile fragment. Pale oxidised dense sandy fabric with slightly duller or reduced margins, broken on all sides. The lower surface as formed is roughened by contact with a coarsely sanded and possibly straw-strewn surface, while the upper surface is smoothed by hand or by a striking-off baton. The thickness and evidence for the forming of the green or unfired tile are consistent with a medieval date, albeit the greater part of accompanying ceramic is Roman. Suggested date: probably Medieval, 1200-1500 Width: 78.2mm, Thickness: 19.9mm, Weight: 97.75gms

Pottery. Fine sandy oxidised fabric with a reduced grey core; rim sherd from a lid-seated vessel with an everted rounded rim and a squat body. This is the only lid-seated sherd observed to date from a large group of sherds, unusual also for its locally atypical fabric. Fresh breaks on all sides suggest this was smashed from a larger fragment during machine excavation of trenches. Suggested date: Late Roman, 200-410 Height: 26.7mm, Width: 49.5mm, Weight: 28.34gms

Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Ceramic waster fragment. Reduced sandy fabric, delaminating at one end when viewed in section, with an integrally formed rounded boss or blob of diameter 50mm at one end. An irregular fragment with its greater extent of thickness 17mm, increasing to 38mm at the blob. A wavy profile may arise from distortion during firing. It is uncertain what may have been made – or failed to be made - here: brick and tile and coarse and fine pottery are all reported from the same restricted location.
