Pottery. German Stoneware: a fine hard-fired pale grey fabric with internal and external salt glaze. The upper part of a young woman’s torso is draped across the abdomen of the man with her dishevelled long hair spilling over what may be the representation of his pubic hair. The man’s fingers rest on her back. The figures appear against a stippled …

Fired clay possible mould fragment. A small chip of fine-textured fired clay with localised reddening and reduction from extreme heat. An aris may occur at the meeting of two flat external surfaces. A concave surface with traces of powdery white material adhering to a reduced area appears to be the inner side of an object considered by this reporter as a possible mould. The finder kindly suggests this to be a crucible fragment, which may be as likely given the irregular the form of a such small fragment, though there is no layering or deposit on the fragment except for the white materi…

Ceramic building material. Pale buff fine hard fired fabric, sherd from a pipe of estimated internal diameter c.200mm with neat external fluting between rounded longitudinal ribs. The production of this form would probably rely upon extrusion machinery developed for the brickmaking industry in the 1840s. The fabric is not a local one, so the railways should perhaps be invoked to explain its arrival here. A thickness of exactly 20mm also suggests metric rather than imperial units were used by its manufacturers, which is further evidence implying a date after 1800. Suggested date: Post-M…
