Ceramic building material, possible hearth, kiln or oven fragment. A fragment of indurated heated clay, reddened on its upper side where rare calcareous inclusions to length 7mm appear, and a darker brown below this, with zones on the lower part appearing like the cancellous tissue within bone – whether this hints at the inclusion of bone fragments in a clay groundmass or is an effect on the clay arising from intense heat is uncertain. This object may be from the surface of a hearth made of puddled clay, or from the domed wall or lining of an oven or kiln. Suggested date: Unknown…

Ceramic building material. Pale grey reduced fabric with paler oxidised external margins, tile fragments. Two small fragments of handmade roof tile, with prominent striking off marks on the upper surfaces as formed, the lower surfaces being flat and smooth. The thicker fragment might be Roman but thick roof tiles, bricks and floor tiles were equally made at later dates, and the fabric and upper surface marks are very similar to that of the smaller fragment whose thickness is a good match for that of a Medieval roof tile.
