Record ID: NLM-C3A45F
Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Dark grey-brown flint blade. A thick sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface with smaller flakes struck by hard hammer working from the ventral aspect. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long straight edge, possibly forming a knife on whose cutting edge pressure might be brought to bear with the user’s thumb resting in the dorsal concave surface. Dark brownish flint seems associated with early and skilful flint-working in our region. The edges are so fresh as to suggest the recent dist…

Object type: SADDLE QUERN
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fine-grained Limestone saddle quern. A neat sub-rectangular block of stepped wedge-shaped profile, worn on its upper surface with a flat base which is indented only at its thicker end. The form is Neolithic, and a saddle quern would be used with a separate cobble grinding stone to grind corn to a coarse flour, and hence marks the advent of arable farming in the area whence it was reported. The small size and flat base – the latter perhaps suggesting use on a flat surface or even a table, which would be a remarkable feature to postulate in a Neolithic settlement – are perhap…

Pale grey-buff semi-translucent flint point, possible borer. A small thick sub-triangular flake with broad and narrow flakes removed from its dorsal side by invasive angled retouch, and with two adjacent lumps trimmed by abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. Now with a concave butt end. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Mid grey opaque flint scraper. A small thick crescentic flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. A misty patina over all surfaces may suggest the object was subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint possible scraper. A small chunk with a flat flake struck from its dorsal side and a bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect may follow a curving edge, though if so, it has been battered. A dense patina overall suggests the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk it may have been imported, perhaps with marl or building materials. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC
Length: 27.5mm, Width: 33.2mm, Thickness: 12.3mm, Weight: 10.99gms

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Black flint debitage fragment. A small irregular chunk with parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side. A dense white patina has accumulated across all surfaces, removed by later damage to expose the underlying tint of the flint. The patina may suggest the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk it may have been imported. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC
