Copper alloy brooch. Cast Colchester brooch, Mackreth type C 3.3. Short plain wings mask a three coiled spring with a chord held by a backward pointing hook which projects from the back of the wings. The wings are at the top of a narrow bow with rounded front and facetted back which tapers to a plain foot [catch plate lost]. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 25-50. A small – perhaps less than one quarter – part of a bracelet of estimated internal diameter c.60mm, comprising five rounded segments separated from each other by paired incised grooves. Fiercely abraded, with ends which are now rounded, a feature which might hint at the reuse of the fragment. Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel withfour oval spokes, each dished in the middle as is the hub where they meet, and a plain probably rectangular section rim of width 3.4mm, of which one quarter is lost. A solid conical axle of length 9mm projects from the back of the hub. The five dished areas may all have been intended to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant now remains. The wheel was a symbol associated with Iron Age cults such as that of Taranis. Suggested date: Late Iron Age to Early Roman, 100 BC-AD100.
