Record ID: YORYM-B35385
Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact. The pendant is in fairly good condition, although no gilding survives and only a few traces of black enamel survive on the face. The face bears the design of a lion rampant, facing left, with a forked tail. I. Szymanski has identified this as probably being the arms of either a Yorkshire knight, Edmund le Wasteneys of Thorngumbald and Staffordshire (a collared silver lion), or else the Kingston family of Wiltshire (a gold lion). This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century.

A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is split. The surface is corroded, with a dark verdigris colour. The face has a design in the form of a ‘lion rampant’ facing left. No traces of enamel or gilding survive apparently, although the lion seems to be a dark red colour, so maybe this was red enamel originally. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century.

A cast copper alloy harness pendant, in the form of a flower. The pendant is in poor condition, and has lost all but two of the original eight petals. The suspension loop survives intact at the end of one of the two remaining petals. The surface is rough, with a blotchy dark green colour. The body of the pendant is formed of a disc with a narrow raised edge. The disc is filled by an eight-petalled flower in shallow relief. Around the edge of the disc are the stumps of the outer petals. The two surviving petals are at the 12 o’clock and half-past four positions. They are rounded lobes…

A cast copper alloy quatrefoil harness pendant. The suspension loop is complete and the pendant is in fair condition. There are pointed projections between the lobes of the quatrefoil. The surface has light grey corrosion. Most of the enamel survives. The heraldic design is clear; it was poorly-executed, following a common pattern: a central, red square with a single lion 'passant gardant', with blue lobes around this within which are fleurs-de-lis. The pointed projections are red. Each element is bordered, now by bare metal. This artefact dates to the 13th to 15th centuries.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead-alloy circular disc brooch. A raised central moulding with three back to back crescents in relief, their ends terminating in a raised dot and is hollowed at the back. The flat surround has decoration comprised of five rings of alternating large and small beads. The brooch is holed in two places at the pin fixing position and the catch-plate. The back is badly corroded. The concentric beaded ring decoration is also found on brooches imitating coins (nummular brooches) and this brooch should be considered a debased version of one of those. It dates to the tenth or eleventh century.

Circular Base. The face of the matrix is unfinished. In the centre is a pin indentation with an incised circle around it. (11.16mm diam.) A cross pattee is the initial mark. There appears to have been four letters which have been incised. The first 'S' is back to front and this may be the reason why the seal is not completed. The 'U' and 'O' appear to be disproportionate sizes, the 'U' being the larger. The style of lettering is indistinguishable. Probably Medieval. Flat back with incomplete loop.
