Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete flint microlith of early Mesolithic date (Clark Group F; Jacobi Group C, 10a), probably a Horsham point. The original form was asymmetrical and triangular. One long side is backed with abrupt retouch, the convex side feathers to an edge which has a patch of short abrupt retouch blunting it at the proximal end and an area of what may be use related damage towards the distal end. The proximal end is concave with a hollow base defined by abrupt retouch. The distal point has broken off.

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete small tranchet adze, made from a larger thermal (frost/”potlid”) fracture of flint, the ventral face (the flatter of the two) carries the remnants of the interior face of this natural fracture, this area is unworked and is patinated slightly more orange/yellow than the knapped surfaces. The butt of the adze is relatively unpatinated, with a tiny patch of cortex extant to the very tip of the butt, the rest of the dorsal cortex is completely removed by flaking, this face shows the flint to have originally been mid-grey, the other parts of the adze are now patinated a…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint pebble macehead manufactured from a naturally perforated flint sponge fossil pebble of light grey flint. The object is sub triangular in shape and has been roughly worked with hard hammered flaking around all sides; the central piercing is unworked and comprises the natural void of the sponge body. There is extensive battering damage around the exterior, likely from use.
Artefacts of this type are presumed to be of Mesolithic date.

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint 'Thames pick' of Mesolithic date, 154.5mm in length, struck from a long flint pebble or nodule of dark grey flint. The proximal end / butt end of the tool retains its light brown cortex and the cross section of the tool appears to follow the original sub rounded profile of the nodule, with only the front portion being worked with hard hammered removals. The cutting edge is wedge shaped and appears to have some use-related damage; originally the tip may have been shaped with one or more tranchet removals but these are no longer particularly clear.

This is a core rejuvenation flake, at the top of the flake is remnants of a prepared platform. The dorsal has a prominent off-centre ridge running down its length, the flake removal taken from one direction. The ventral side has a large bulb of percussion at the base. The flint is covered in a creamy patina with grey patches.

Flint debitage. Six tiny [of lengths between 24.5mm to 9.4mm] flakes with scars from the removal of narrow or parallel flakes from their dorsal sides, and with flat or bulbar ventral surfaces. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the objects have subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest their incorporation in gravel. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC

Flint possible core fragment. A small chunk with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a rounded or bulbar ventral surface. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. More than one episode of working is possible. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC

Flint core. A small irregular chunk with narrow parallel flakes removed by multangular working. A dense creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. Probably mid-brown flint debitage. A thin flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge. Fire-crazed overall. A creamy patina lost at a chip at one end [which reveals the tint of the flint] may suggest that the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment, and hence that it may have been imported to its find spot, which is not on chalk. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC

Patinated flint debitage with some iron-stained spots. Seven thin flakes [of lengths between 33.8mm and 20.3mm], all with long narrow parallel flakes struck from their dorsal surfaces. The dorsal surfaces are either flat or, for the three smallest flakes, slightly concave. The patina may indicate the objects have endured exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk, this might hint at the importation of chalk and flints, as for building, road-making or marling, in which artefacts were accidentally incorporated. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000BC
