A crushed silver object, probably the body of a late medieval or early post-medieval whistle, now badly crushed. Dating to the period c. AD1375-1600.
Description: The object is made of two hemispheres soldered together with the addition of a soldered lip going around circumference. There is a gap in the circumference which, judging by similar examples reported as Treasure and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (2014 T155; DOR-6E2574) (BH-29B66E) would have been the location of the blow hole. The ridge along the circumference suggests the whistle was hemispherically join…

A post-medieval lead alloy 'hawking' whistle (c. 1700-c. 1850). The whistle is incomplete. The object comprises three parts, with the curved plate soldered to underside of the mouth-piece and end section joined at an expanded sleeve. The casting seams are clearly discernible on both sections and there is no cast decoration. At the terminal is an incomplete suspension loop only the neck of which remains. The lower half of the object has been perforated due to damage, possibly from the plough.
Similar whistles have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For exampl…

Fragment of a cast lead alloy object, probably a whistle in the form of a pipe bowl, dating from c.1750-1900.
The object is flattened but may have been cylindrical or domed in its original state. The surface is covered in pellets and lines which appear to have no recognisable order or pattern. The top of the object may have been open, like a loop, but this may be due to breakages.
The object can be compared to a more complete example recorded on the PAS database as PUBLIC-B5590B.

A cast lead alloy whistle in the form of a pipe bowl, dating from c. 1750-1900.
The bowl is damaged, with 80% of the rim missing. The bowl is long and oval in cross-section, with a short pointed heel which may suggest a date later than 1600 (Ayto 2002, Clay Tobacco Pipes, Shire Album 37). The circular-section stem has broken off very close to the bowl.
There is some decoration on the face opposite the stem, in the form of 5 evenly-spaced knops running 21mm up from the heel . The hole through the stem is much wider than on most clay pipes, with an internal diameter of 6mm. The pi…

A fragment of a silver-gilt Post-Medieval whistle. The spherical sounding-chamber is all that has survived. It is comprised of two hemispheres with turned edges, which have been soldered together to form a hollow globe. At one side is a hole and there is damage and loss of the silver-gilt where the pipe would have been attached.
Although a fragment, it shows similarities with boatswains' whistles. See for example DOR-243912, BERK-E24712 and DOR-6E2574.
The whistle fragment is Post-Medieval and dates from the sixteenth to seventeenth century.

A fragment of a post-medieval silver 'huntsman's' whistle. The whistle comprises a cylinder of sheet metal with a butt joint which has been stamped with a band of impressed diagonal decoration of pellets and ridges. The ends of the decorative band are concealed by decorative wire loops. At one end, presumably near the missing mouthpiece, is a maker's mark which comprises a shield containing a standing bird.

An incomplete cast pewter whistle of late post-medieval date, c.AD 1700 - 1900. The body of the whistle is hollow and tubular with an extended section to the top hemisphere. Two circumferential bands, one substantially larger than the other, are present dividing the whistle into three sections, the upper most being the extended lip mouth piece. The middle section houses the D-shaped sound hole and the third section tapers to a rounded terminal with a worn knop which represents the remainder of a loop for attachment to a lanyard. Casting flashes are present around the outer edge of the…

An incomplete post-Medieval lead alloy whistle (c. 1600-c. 1800).
This hollow whistle flares in plan from the mouth-piece to the distal end and is oval in cross-section.
The mouth-piece has parallel sides and there is a 'D'-shaped sound hole about half way along the length of the body of the whistle. Decoration consists of fine pellets and a circumferential band of raised scrolls or tendrils at the distal end. These are separated from the pellets by a circumferential rib. Inside, just below the straight edge of the mouth-piece, there is a thin sheet metal baffle (or fipple) whic…

An incomplete silver whistle made from silver sheet, somewhat flattened at one end. The mouthpiece is intact, shaped for blowing, being D shaped in section with a separate piece fixed underneath producing a curved underside expanding to a circular sectioned tube. There is a sound slit half way along the top of the whistle. This is distorted but relatively undamaged. There are the remains of a maker's mark just above slit between it and the mouthpiece. One letter of the mark appears to be a D but the rest is too worn to read. The rest of the whistle is plain. There would probably have …

A fragment of a post medieval pipe clay whistle in the Saintonge style. The fragment contains the irregular quatrefoil base of the whistle with a broken cylindrical projection which would have been a form of handle. On top of the quatrefoil the ring shaped body of the whistle is left as a small stump; the centre of the whistle is hollow. This area would have been filled with water to produce the whistle noise. The fragment measures 44.7mm (length including broken handle) x 23.9mm (width) x 13.2mm (broken height) and weighs 9.49g.
Roy Stephenson has examined the fragment and suggest…

An incomplete and flattened cast lead alloy possible toy dating from the Post-Medieval to the Modern period. The object is semi-circular in plan and before it was flattened together would have been hollow. The open end terminates with an irregular break which appear to be recent. At the rounded end are two incomplete circular projections which may be casting sprus or part of the object. Each face is decorated with moulded ring-and-dot motifs, two of which are visible on one face. A post-Medieval cast white metal (perhaps pewter or tin) whistle dating from 1700-1900. The main body of the whistle is tubular in cross-section with a semi-circular sound hole at the top. Between the sound hole and the mouth-piece is a narrow collar and level with the collar, on the inside of the whistle, is a vertical baffle with a slim hole at the top. The mouth-piece is convex at the top and concave on the underside to accommodate the lower lip of the player, resulting in a narrow, semi-circular inlet hole. At the opposite end to the mouth-piece the main body has a tapering,…

Possibly Copper alloy whistle. Cast tube with a pair of opposed rectangular slots at one end and a metal plate or reed within it at the other; an apparently separately cast and collared mouthpiece is attached at the slotted end. The tubular element bears the stamped legend: J. HUDSON & Co / Birmingham / 1916, which may supply an apt date. The manufacture of a whistle in Birmingham may suggest it was intended for military or police use as such objects would more usually be home made in an agricultural setting. Suggested date: Modern.
