Unidentified object made of a single piece of copper alloy. It has a central cast cylinder, 6.7mm in diameter, with a hammered and slightly projecting cone shaped head. At the base of the cylinder the piece is hammered and flattened and then looped around the central cylinder and itself in three loops ending with a triangular flattened terminal just touching the top of the central cylinder. The loooped section is rough and faceted as though it has been bent and hammered into shape when cool. The one side appears slightly flattened and it will stand upright on this. The combination of c…

A lead-alloy spindle whorl, decorated on both sides. The whorl is plano-convex with a circular central hole, but is damaged on both faces. The decoration on one side is raised radial ribs dividing the whorl into eight sections, with a large raised pellet in alternate spaces. On the other side, the raised ribs form a square with a St. Andrew’s cross inside it, running from corner to corner of the square. There is also a central raised rib sub dividing two opposing triangles formed by the square and the cross, and central pellets in the other two triangles. It is 32.3mm in diameter and…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead weight of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section and with faceted exterior edges on the top surface. Both front and back faces appear to be undecorated and the casting is crudly done. It measures 39.6mm in length, 34.4mm in width, 15.1mm in thickness, and weighs 167.8 grams. The lack of defined decorative motifs renders the dating of this object uncertain, although associated finds might indicate a Medeival to Post-Medieval periods.

Cast lead alloy circular spindle whorl or weight. It is circular with a highly domed, almost semi-circular, top and flat base. There is a circular hole running through the middle and possible traces of raised decoration on the top. Due to the simpilicity of the shape it is hard to date it precisely and it could be Roman - Post Medieval. It is 19.9mm in diameter, 9.5mm thick and 15.95 grams in weight; the central hole is a maximum of 6.1mm.

An unidentified object: comprising a flat fragment of bone attached to a ring by a suspension loop secured by a rivet. The bone is broken on all edges except near the loop where it is straight. On one face a rebate runs parallel to this edge and turns through a right angle to follow two broken edges. On the other face a rebate runs parallel to one broken edge. The loop is round-sectioned except where flattened near the rivet. The ring is round-sectioned. The bone measures >16mm x >12mm, 2.5mm thick. Length of loop 9.5mm. External diameter of ring 13mm. Internal diameter 10mm. Not recent.

Cast lead weight, oval in profile and circular in plan with a circular hole running most of the way through the lengh but blocked at the end. It probably held a rod with the weight acting as some type of counterweight. The surface is uneven. It is 32.2mm in diameter, 45.2mm tall and weighs 193 grams. The hole is 9.4mm in diameter. Cast lead weights were often made at home or locally for a wide range of uses, they are therefore hard to date precisely but most are Roman, Medieval or Post Medieval in date.
