Object type: POWDER MEASURE
Broad period: MODERN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A brass mechanised and orignally sprung powder measure. This machined composite brass element fixed via a screw thread (now lost) to the mouth of a leather powder horn / flask. By depressing the sprung lever a series of shaped slides move allowing a single measure of black powder to be dispensed into the muzzle of a either a musket or rifle. The form of this measure is unusual and is likely to date from the period 1780-1860, being used as an alternative to paper cartridges. The form of powder flask is likely to have been used for sport rather than military service. The measure is…

An incomplete post-Medieval multi-pointed spur rowel (c. 1550-1750). Both faces are convex and each point tapers in thickness and width. The distances between the points differs around the rowel and the depth of the point is also variable. In total there five large points each marked with a central making the object resemble a leaf. The hole at the centre is circular and has a diameter of 2.88mm. The rowel is a mid brownish green colour, but the surface patina has been removed in one small patch. A light green active corrosion is present. The rowel measures 34.71mm length, 33.24m…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is circular in plan and domed in profile. The front face is convex whilst the reverse is concave. The edges of the fitting are bevelled. The front face has been decorated with three concentric cast circles which are evenly spaced around a central circular boss. Small traces of an applied tinned finish are present on the front face of the fitting. The reverse face of the fitting is concave with two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) positioned on either edge of the fitting. These hooks w…

Six (6) irregular flint cores used for the production of blades of later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). All of the cores are irregular in plan and profile. Four (4) of the six are true (classic) cores being broadly sub-rectangular or sub-triangular in plan with a series of neat compact scars / blade removals in one or more directions. Many of the cores have multiple striking platforms which are neatly trimmed and dressed. All cores are relatively small and the other two examples are probably core fragments removed by either redressing the core to work in an opposing direction; or,…

Seven sherds representing 84% of the base from a cremation urn / burial vessel - most probably of Early - Middle Bronze Age date (2200-1800 BC). The seven sherds vary in size, thickness and weight but all have been broken due to disturbance in the ground through ploughing having crisp fresh unweathered or abraded edges. The fragments were gathered together by the farmer who noticed a white powdery spread in a recently improved / ploughed field suggesting that they were recovered shortly after disturbing the below ground archaeological context. It is probable that the ceramics represen…

A mottled mid grey coloured core rejuvination flake of later Mesolithic date. In form the flint is blade like with a crested shaped profile. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion and chonchoidal ripples - a clear knapping platform is present. The dorsal face has a series of parallel sided blade scars extending in multiple directions. This suggests that the core from which this blade was struck had been previously worked in at least two opposing directions - with it being turned twice through 45 degrees to allow for additional blade removals. There is no retouch present and this bl…

The ventral face shows clear conchoidal ripples however the striking platform and bulb of concussion are lost. Both long edges of the dorsal face have been retouched and both exhibit significant ground pressure damage on the cutting edge from use. The fabricator is formed on a triangular sectioned rod of knapped flint - which is a mid-grey colour with an area of off white chalk derived cortex on one area - this cortex could also act as a textured holding point which would aid grip during use. A possible Levalloisian core flake / blade of most probable Neolithic date. The blade is rectangular in plan with a lenticular cross-section. The lower edge is broken - most probably in antiquity as the whole flint has the same mid-grey coloured milky surface patina. The flaking appears intentionally to have shaped the flint while still on the original core, creating a distinctive 'tortoise shell' flaking, typical of Levallois flint technology. A near complete axe head formed of a coarse grained igneous rock dating from the later Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe has been knapped and pecked into shape although the surface is heavily weathered. The rock from which it is made has a buff brown coloured patina. A small removal on the cutting edge reveals a much darker charcoal grey coloured fine grained igneous stone beneath. There is considerable mid pink brown staining across the body of the axe and this maybe as a result of the burial environment which is commensurate with the red colour of Herefordshire soil which are i…
