Copper alloy vessel sherd. It consists of part of the side wall and an out-turned rim. All edges terminate in old breaks and, as found, it measures 26.3mm in height and is 18.2 mm wide, with a side wall thickness tapering from 2.6mm at the lower edge to 4.9mm just below the rim. The inner face is a mid-green colour, and the outer face is blackened from smoke, so this is probably a fragment from a cooking vessel, probably a cauldron or posnet. Too little of the item remains for any more positive identification, and it probably dates from the late medieval to post medieval period, …

Post medieval copper alloy buckle, consisting of part of the frame only; one end of a rectangular loop, a shallow triangle which is undecorated on the outer face, bevelled on the internal edge, and has a raised transverse rib joining the two corners across the inner face. The sides are not bevelled like the end section, and are both truncated by old breaks. The outer face has a convex profile and the inner has a raised rib along each side between which is a convex moulding. It measures 29.9mm in width, is 2.2mm thick and is 16.2mm in length, though it would originally have been much l…

A rim sherd from a copper-alloy cooking vessel, of probable late medieval or early post medieval date. The fragment is in the form of a rectangle with two opposing corners missing, and measures up to 49.7mm wide and 47.3mm high. The fragment is gently curved from side to side and is thicker at the midpoint, with a maximum thickness of 3.1mm gradually thinning to 1.4mm at the two broken edges. There is an internally thickened rim extending to a maximum thickness of 4.6mm and to a depth of c.17mm below the bevelled top edge. It weighs 26.9g. The item is a light - mid green colour, …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post medieval lead coin mould. The object is a flat piece of lead with an impression of the obverse of a George III coin. The mould is incomplete, an irregular break having removed around 40% from one edge, but based on what is left it would presumably originally have been round and had a diameter about 4 - 5mm larger than the coin. As found it measures 29.7mm by 26.9mm, is up to 3.1mm thick and weighs 5.18g. The letters GIVS III RE in retrograde are clearly visible, as is part of the bust, with a very distinctive quiff at the top of the monarchs head. The positioning of the letteri…

A post medieval copper alloy button. A 28.2mm diameter solid disc with a slightly convex outer face, and a concave reverse which has a small conical central boss with the stubs of an iron wire loop embedded. The obverse has two incised circular grooves at the periphery enclosing a series of radiating discrete diagonal lines, producing a hachure effect. Bailey lists many buttons of similar construction, and, although none are identical, this is similar to that illustrated as fig. 9.234, which is dated to the 18th century.

Silver cufflink or button with an impressed design in relief of two flaming hearts underneath two clasped hands emerging from cuffs, surmounted by a crown. The item has a downturned rim which is complete but partly detached and the hollow reverse has a broken loop in the centre. It measures 15.5mm in diameter and the overall depth from front to back is 1.9mm. The plate from which the item is made is 0.5mm thick, and it weighs 0.72g. The design is generally supposed to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, though it apparently remained popular for so…

Copper alloy (bronze) handle, in the form of a solid rod with a round cross section, tapering from 11.5mm in diameter at the (slightly convex) proximal end to 8.0mm at the distal, where it terminates in an old break. It measures 69.9mm in length, and has two decorative circumferential grooves 15mm and 19.5mm up from the unbroken end. The object has a well developed mid to dark green patina and is presumably post medieval or modern in date, with a suggested date range of 1600 - 1900. As to function, it could be from an item of agricultural machinery, or the handle from a safety razor.

Copper metal working debris. A fragment of solidified copper alloy, roughly shaped like a barbed arrowhead with the tip missing. All surfaces are uneven with vesicles, and it is perforated by a hole at one point, although one face is noticeably smoother than the other with transverse wrinkles, (possibly indicative of it having cooled more slowly and not been in contact with the ground?) and in a couple of places on the more uneven face there appears to be soil incorporated within the fragment. Elsewhere it is a uniform dark green colour. The maximum length is 39.9mm, width is 42.…

A post medieval copper alloy button measuring 24.4mm in diameter. It appears to be made in two parts, a slightly convex front with a flat back, which has a broken iron wire loop which has caused considerable corrosion. The front has a shield blazoned with a spread eagle with a crown over the top. The arms are those of Prussia, and I think this is a military button, probably dating from the Napoleonic war period, though possibly later.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight which is roughly rectangular in plan and D-shaped in section, and is very crudely made, possibly cast in earth or sand as the surface at the sides is lumpy and irregular. It has a central perforation measuring 4.5mm diameter at the apex and 6mm at the flattened face, which looks like it was made from either side as it narrows toward the midpoint. It measures 13.3mm in height at the apex, and is up to 32.5mm in length by 28.4mm in width, and it weighs 44.5g. It is possibly a spindle whorl, although the perforation is smaller than usual, and it may have some other funct…

A complete modern copper alloy solid discoidal trade weight, probably an apothecary weight, dating from the latter part of the 19th century. It is circular in plan with downward sloping sides and a raised bevelled rim. The upper face is stamped '8 DRAMS' with a verification mark of a crown with V R below at 10 o' clock. The underside is flat with a central hollow which was filled with lead, but it looks as though it has been in a fire (possibly stubble-burning?) as the lead has melted and spread over the base. The weight is generally a reddish brown colour, and it measures from 23.6mm…

A post medieval copper alloy buckle. It has an elliptical double loop frame with a convex outer face and a flat reverse, which has file marks. There is a centrally located integral axis bar with small triangular knops on the outer edges, and the frame is ornately decorated with groups of transverse raised moulded ridges, with grooves interspersed and pin rests at either narrow end. Cast copper alloy buckle. It consists of about a quarter of an ornately decorated rectangular double loop buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. It is missing the pin, and has old breaks at the midpoint of the side, where the spindle bar would have been attached, and at the end, to one side of the pin rest.
