A copper-alloy looped strap fitting, dating from the medieval period. The plate is rectangular and of flat section, with an enamelled panel of decoration occupying the upper two thirds of its top surface. Although heavily worn and corroded, the design in this panel appears to be that of a castle of three turrets, executed in low relief, with traces of blue enamel in the surrounding fields. The loop, which projects straight downwards at the base, is of the same width as the plate and has sides of sub-rectangular cross section. On the reverse of the plate, two integrally cast rivets …

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire

A post-medieval copper-alloy strap mount. The head of the mount is of flat section and takes the form of a stylised flower head, with four rounded petals, interspersed by four smaller, pointed petals. Two copper-alloy rivets are located at the top and bottom ends of the reverse, respectively; these rivets taper to a point and have been deliberately bent outwards, presumably to secure them to the now-missing strap. Width: 15.7mm; height (head): 15.2mm; total height: 20.2mm; thickness (head): 0.7mm. Weight: 0.94g.

A copper-alloy frame from a medieval folding strap-clasp. The frame is trapezoidal in plan, flaring towards the outer side, which has an offset bar with oval cross section. At the opposite end, the inner bar is also offset, is of rectangular cross section and has a central notch, which may be the result of corrosion. The horizontal sides are of pentagonal cross section. Length: 14.5mm; width: 15.5mm; thickness: 2.8mm. Weight: 0.91g. Several examples of folding strap-clasps have been found in excavations in London, in layers dating from the late 13th to early 15th centuries AD

A Roman to early-medieval copper-alloy strap fitting. The object has been formed from a rectangular sheet of copper-alloy, one of the long sides of which has been folded over to create a U-sectioned socket. The upper surface of this fitting is profusely decorated. At the base, seven panels adorn the upper surface of the socket. Five of these panels comprise four slightly raised columns, with a groove separating each column from the next; the remaining two panels, located at the right- and left-hand ends respectively, are portions of these wider panels. A row of incuse pellets is lo…

A Roman copper-alloy strap mount. The piece comprises a sub-rectangular plate with a pair of longitudinal grooves extending along the bottom edge. A tab projects downwards from just left of centre on this bottom edge. Two integrally cast copper-alloy rivets spring from the right- and left-hand ends of the reverse, respectively, both having been bent outwards, presumably to secure them to a strap. Width: 31.9mm; height: 15.5mm; thickness of plate: 2.8mm; total depth (including rivets): 8.2mm. Weight: 4.1g. The original form of this mount may have been comparable to that of PAS
