An incomplete copper alloy composite strap end, dating to the Medieval period (c. 12th-15th century AD). This strap end consists of two sub-rectangular sheets of copper alloy, fashioned into a tongue-shaped form with sub-triangular, pointed end; round aperture, grooved on front; tapering sides; two rivets. The strap end would have held a copper alloy spacer to maintain tension on the leather strap, which would have been held between the plates by the rivets at the wider end. It seems likely that this would have been a forked spacer (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, Fig. 93). It measur…

A fragment of a copper alloy Medieval strap end formed from two sheet plates, riveted together by a single rivet at each end. The strap end is sub-rectangular in plan, tapering from the attachment end to the closed end. The narrow terminal is pointed with a knop at the end. There seem to be very faint remnants of some incised decoration, although it is not discernible at present. It measures 16.5mm long, 11.3mm wide, 1.5mm thick and weighs 1.07 grams. Cf. Egan and Pritchard (2002), Figs. 93 and 96, pp140-148 for similar strap ends. A 13th-14th century date is likely.
