Record ID: SUSS-ED5D06
Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roughly circular, plano-convex piece of lead alloy with a slightly rough flat base and smooth, slightly domed, top. The piece is probably a drop of molton lead that has cooled on a relatively smooth surface. The shape and smoothness of the domed top suggests this cooled in contact with air rather than a mould. Another piece of potential casting waste was found near by (SUSS-ED43B3). Lead was used domestically for many items such as tokens and toys and also for repairs to pots etc from the Roman period onwards. It is 22.9mm by 21.3mm by 3.9mm thick and weighs 13.47 grams.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead alloy spindle whorl or weight. It is hemispherical with a highly domed top and flat base. There is a circular hole running through the middle, the hole tapers inwards slightly from the base. Due to the simplicity of the shape it is hard to date the object precisely and it could be Roman - Post Medieval. It is 24.9mm in diameter, 12.4mm thick and 32.71 grams in weight; the central hole is a maximum of 4.9mm in diameter.

Piece of copper alloy casting waste. The piece has the typical irregular, rounded shape and and rough bottom of something formed from spilt molten metal. A projecting oval piece at the top with a tapering section maybe a sprue. It is not clear whether this is a mis-cast item or just a spillage, if it is an item the intended object is not clear. It is 31.7mm long, 27.9mm wide and 7.3mm thick (excluding the sprue, 13.9mm including); it weighs 18.5 grams. As a single piece of casting waste it cannot be dated more precisely than Bronze Age - Post Medieval.
