White Metal and Glass Brooch. Cast brooch with stub of a hinged pin and a complete catch-plate knop on the reverse. The brooch forms a flattened V-shape vaguely resembling outspread wings with a raised field on each, and has a plano-convex ruby glass gem set at their union as a boss within a collared setting. The Art Nouveau effect depends largely on the graceful lines of the piece which may suggest a Late Victorian or Edwardian date. Suggested date: Modern, 1890-1920. Length: 55.4mm, Height/Width: 14.8mm, Thickness (maximum): 6.0mm, Weight: 5.92gms.

White metal brooch. Lentoid openwork frame with solid zones at top, bottom, edges and a central position with vacant settings of diameter 2.5mm for paste stones (all lost). The appearance of white metal may arise from a plating. Spots of solder on the back suggest the loss of a vertical pin. Suggested date: Modern, 1920-1970. Length: 31.9mm, Height: 15.5mm, Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 2.30gms.

White metal brooch. Oval-ended commemorative brooch. The back is hollow with a prominent rim, and there are three knops on its upper side. The occasion marked was the Bar Mizvah of the recipient. Applied decoration to the front comprises a ring of simple floral forms, and a label set aslant reading: MIZPAH. Further affixtures may be lost from the opposite end. An incised legend reads: THE LORD WATCH BETWEEN ME & THEE WHEN WE ARE ABSENT FROM ONE ANOTHER; lettering is erratically incised and arranged. On the back at one end is a hinge, possibly for a pin. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-19…

Silver brooch fragment. The identification of the material has been disputed by the finder. Kevin Leahy therefore kindly re-examined the object under a microscope, and comments as follows: 'The fracture suggests that this piece is copper alloy'. The record has therefore been amended, with the silver surface appearance now considered as plating. Cast bow from a small bow brooch, possibly Mackreth type Almgren 16. A straight-sided bow with a central longitudinal ridge and with grooved borders; neatly cross-cut horizontally and diagonally at its lower end. The top is constricted and…

White Metal and copper alloy Brooch. Pressed metal of thickness circa 0.5mm, the front from a hollow composite discoid uniform button. An oval loop of copper alloy has been inserted in the back, and is flanked by the stubs of an attached hinged pin and a loop to receive its pointed end. The design on the front is the Royal Arms, with Lion and Unicorn flanking a crowned garter and shield of Arms with a small lion walking right above the crown. The finder suggests this may be silver, but its light weight may suggest some other white metal. The object was perhaps adapted for a British…

White metal probable brooch. Pressed metal disc – though a six-sided form may have been intended which the finder aptly compares to the shape of the modern 50 pence piece – with a billeted outer border tinted a dull bronze-brown, separated by a rounded rim from a flat central field on which slightly sticky traces of an organic fixative remain. A separate stone has presumably been lost. The back retains traces of white metal plating and rust, though no trace of fastening gear remains. Possibly a ‘fairing’ or item of trinket jewellery, though if so, of an unfamili…
