The slightly corroded head from a cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch with a double pierced lug spring attachment. The bow curves through over ninety degrees and expands into the head which has the pair of perforations uppermost. The lower hole appears to retain the remnant of the iron axis bar, judging by the trace of orange corrosion product. The upper hole is now blocked with corrosion, but would have held the chord of the spring, both of which are now missing. The wings are situated internally above the lug. They are both small and stubby and triangular in shape, …

Incomplete copper alloy and enamel Roman plate brooch of the equal-ended type with a hinged mechanism, missing its pin shank and most of the enamel. It measures 34mm in length and is max.11.2mm wide. It weighs 2.15g. Both hinge mechanism and catchplate are slightly bent to one side, possibly as a result of being trodden on in ancient times. At the centre of the bow is a 11.2x12.6mm square, a double rib around a central sunken area 7.6x7.6mm. This has a small amount of white enamel remaining. Above, the bow extends dropping in a slight curve, behind which is the hinge mechanism, a…

A very worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. A one-piece example with an intact rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 13.1mm). This hook would have held the external chord of the spring; this latter, along with the pin, broken just below the head such that a curved vestige remains, is now missing. Below the hook there are two flat wings of which only vestiges now remain. The bow is oval in cross-section. It tapers from a maximum diameter of c. 5.4mm to less than 1.5mm at the catchplate end. A worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, possibly a 1st-century Hod Hill type. The fragment consists of the leg and lower part of the bow. The surviving bow fragment is flat and rectangular (L.: 8.6mm, W.: 5.37mm, Th.: 2.4mm). It is decorated on its upper surface by three longitudinal grooves creating two internal ridges with a ridge bordering on either side. The leg slopes down to a small terminal knob. The leg itself is very slender and tapers from the bow to a width of only 1.7mm before the terminal. It is bevelled on both sides so that it is triangular in cross-…

A worn cast copper-alloy fragment from a Roman Disc-and-Trumpet brooch. The flared trumpet head survives, as does the upper section of the bow. The head is sub-circular with a protrusion at the terminal, probably a broken loop. The edge is flattened. The semi-circular perforated lugs on the lower surface are very abraded; the axis bar and pin are missing. Below the head the bow constricts to a width of 4.75mm. It then expands into a central discoidal element with the remnants of four side protrusions arranged in saltire. This element too has a flattened border, within which is a rais…

The fragment measures 44.9mm in length and is very straight in profile. It is 5.4mm wide at the break and 5.4mm wide at the foot. The breaks are old. The bow is roughly triangular in section, being flat to the reverse. To the front is a mid-rib, from which either side falls away. A corroded and incomplete copper-alloy La Tène I Iron Age brooch (3rd-4th century BC). The brooch is sub-oval in plan and semicircular in cross-section, with a flat reverse surface. At the head one spring coil remains, to the left when viewing the brooch with head uppermost. The bow arcs round to a leg in the same plane as the head; the foot and catchplate have been lost along with the rest of the pin mechanism. The brooch is a mid-green colour with variable survival of surface patina. A comparable example can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2001, 288; ref. 725).

The foot from an early-medieval small-long brooch (5th/6th century AD). The foot is expanded, with five sides. It is asymmetrical, with the left side when the foot is lowermost longer and wider. Above the foot the leg is as narrow as 6mm before flaring to 24.25mm at the foot. At the other end the bow curves upwards before a break. On the lower side of the leg is a slightly abraded, perpendicular catchplate (14.9 x 5.25 x 2mm). An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman crossbow brooch of c. 4th-century date. The brooch is missing its pin and catchplate element; the foremost, central knob was missing when found only to be discovered at a later date and affixed to the brooch by the finder. This central knob is spherical, but worn and corroded, as are the others. The side knobs are globular, and wider than they are long (c. 11.85 x 10.7 x 10.5mm). They both seem to have abraded central points suggesting that they would have tended towards being onion shaped. On all three knobs there is a constriction and collar…

A complete cast copper-alloy Roman T-shape brooch dating to around the second half of the 1st century AD. The brooch survives in very good condition with all of its components present. The head has tubular wings, undecorated but for a transverse incision towards the end of each wing on the upper surface. The axis bar is obscured by the wings, but there is no evidence that it is made of anything other than copper alloy. The pin is retained, complete, around the axis bar. A large and elaborate cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of the Hod Hill type, Hattatt's Class B (with side knobs/lugs). The brooch is incomplete, missing its pin, but apart from some slight damage survives well. The sub-triangular head terminates in a cylinder formed by rolling the terminal back round on itself (W.: 17.4mm). This is slightly abraded uppermost but retains the remnant of the iron axis bar in both halves either side of the central pin slot; the composition is suggested by traces of iron staining. Below the cylinder the head, incurving, tapers to a width of 5.95mm. It is …

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman crossbow brooch of c. early 4th-century date. The fragment consists of the narrow bow and foremost, central knob; the crossarm has become detached. This central knob is globular, but pointed, and gently faceted (L.: 10.85mm, max. W.: 9.35mm). There is a constriction at its base. It is worn and corroded, as is the bow, and has turned a mid-green colour. This wear obscures any possible decoration. The bow is recessed to take the crossarm.
