Copper alloy wire fragment. A straight length of drawn wire cut with shears at either end. The thin straight form might suggest this to have been intended as a pin shank, but no trace of the head or its loss were noted, nor is one end pointed beyond what resulted from its cutting. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900.

Copper alloy wire. A length of drawn wire of diameter 2mm with a long strip of copper alloy sheet of thickness c.1mm wrapped tightly around it. Both ends of the wire are bent back where they emerge from this sheathing. This object might relate to early electrical machinery. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1930.

Copper alloy coil. A fragment of drawn wire of diameter 2.1mm which has been hammered to a flat strip of width 4mm, and then tightly wrapped around a second length of drawn wire. This configuration might be apt to electrical experimentation. It appears the object has been cleaned by the finder. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950.

Copper alloy wire. A length of drawn wire with angled sheared ends. The finder kindly suggests this to be a post-medieval clasp, citing Read 2008 page 142 nos 557-558, though this reporter would rather see it as, at best, an improvised version rather than one of these more neatly 'knotted' forms. Copper alloy wire. Two strands of thick [diameter 2.2mm] drawn wire, arranged to lie parallel to each other, with one strand tightly twisted around the other in four tight loops, and then hammered flat on one side. The protruding ends are flattened at one end, probably deliberately rather than as the result of snipping. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800

Copper alloy wire. Two strands of drawn copper alloy wire of diameter 2mm; on strand being wrapped tightly around the other, cut at one or both ends. This may simply be a sport involving two pieces of scrap, though the configuration might also be apt to a simple electrical function. The diameter of the wire appears to respect the metric system, it may therefore be of recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950

Object type: WINGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Late Bronze Age bronze end-winged axe, belonging to the Carp's Tongue complex of Ewart Park metalworking, corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 7 and dated to c. 950-750BC.
The winged axe is incomplete, missing both wings on the unlooped side (the axe has an overall length of 1360.9mm and a weight of 282.8g). The butt protrudes beyond the return of the wings (by 14mm) and expands to the end (with a width of 22.4mm and a thickness of 6.1mm). The end of the butt has two 'horns' each side of a central rectangular break, which would have been attached to the casting jet before remov…

Fragment of late Middle to Early late Bronze Age winged axehead with side loop. Only the central section survives with a loop on the underside of the flanged body and old brittle fractures at either end where the butt end and majority of the remarkably thin axe blade have broken away. The wings are long with the ends turning sharply inwards towards each other to secure the original haft. No stop ridges. Dark brown water patina with casting seams largely removed. Penard to Ewart park metalwork phases circa 1300-800 BC. A similar and more complete axe can be seen at BH-BE3C94 on the Por…

Incomplete cast copper alloy winged axe, the blade end is missing. The butt end has a wide 'H' shaped cross section, which becomes more rectangular towards the broken edge. There are two wings on the upper and lower surfaces which curve towards eachother, but the ends do not touch. There is a side loop which is filled with corrosion products.
Length: 69.27mm.
The loop is 23.06mm long, 6.41mm thick.
32.70mm wide, 38.03mm thick at central point. 12.54mm thick tapering to 6.19mm on the body. wings are 5.15mm thick.

An incomplete late Bronze Age copper-alloy end-winged axe. Sub-rectangular in plan with butt, side loop folded wings and crescentic cutting edge. The butt end and most of the wings are missing. The damaged butt end is 25.34mm wide and 20.14mm thick. Casting seams are faintly visible along the centre of each side. The small surviving sections of the wings suggest that both are C-shaped in cross-section with their ends turned inwards. The lower face and blade flare outwards before reaching a narrow crescentic cutting edge which is very abraded. The blade is 37.95mm wide an…

A fragment of late Middle to early Late Bronze Age end winged axehead with side loop dating c. 1150-800 cal BC.
Only the central section survives with an incomplete side loop and wings. The butt end terminates in worn break with an 'H' shaped cross section; the tips of the flanges turning inwards at 90 degrees to create wings forming a proto-socket each side of the septum. The edges of the flanges are worn and incomplete. The blade is missing, with a worn break just below the socket with a rectangular cross section. The loop (20.5mm long; 7.8mm wide; 7.3mm high); is …
