Early medieval, Viking weight of 9th or 10th century date
The weight comprises a cut fragment of ornamental enamelled copper alloy metalwork set into a lead base and is near-complete, missing much of the enamel (with a weight of 116.3g). The lead base is flat and sub-oval (36.5mm x 27.5mm) and the sides are slightly concave and convergent to the top face with a sub-rectangular section (19.0mm thick). Probable vessel fragment, possibly a handle of Early Medieval date
The object is incomplete, broken at one end (with a surviving length of 101.9mm and a weight of 197.7g). The possible handle is of D-shaped section at the break (26.8mm wide and 14.7mm thick) and has straight, slightly converging sides towards the terminal. The face is near flat, slightly concave along its length and is decorated with a panel within a raised border, comprising an interlace design in sunken relief. It is likely that the interlace depicts two intertwined beasts and appears to have a rear facing head a…

Early Medieval copper alloy sword pommel of late lobed form, probably of 10th or 11th century date The pommel has height of 24.10mm and a length of 51.92mm across the base which curves upwards at both ends and would have rested upon a concave pommel bar. The interior of the pommel has an oval opening (42mm x 10.5mm internal dimensions at the base). The apex of the pommel has an oval aperture (7.2mm x 6.0mm) to accommodate the protruding sword tang. The exterior is decorated with a larger central lobe flanked on each side with smaller lobes and terminal knops. The pommel demonstrates a…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published
The object comprises the hilt and upper blade of an iron sword (overall length 235mm). The surviving blade length below the lower guard is 109mm; the blade is straight and two-edged, with a width of 52mm at top, tapering to 47mm at the break. To judge from the other blades (80-95cm long: Evison 1967, 189, Appendix), about 75% of its original length is missing. The blade profile cannot, therefore, help determine the form and date, which is reliant on the guard and pommel.
The pommel is constructed in two sections, the upper pommel cap being of broad flat, trilobate form. It is fa…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Early Medieval copper alloy strap-end of 9th to later 10th century date The strap-end is incomplete and slightly distorted, missing the outside edge and possibly the attachment edge (with a surviving length of 35.6mm and a weight of 7.0g). The form of strap-end corresponds with Thomas' (2004, p 4) Class F. The strap-end is widest at the attachment end (with a width of 16.9mm) and may have been attached using two circular holes (2.0mm and 1.5mm diameters) near the corners, although there is no slot to accommodate the strap. The sides are straight but irregular and converge towards the …

Early Medieval (Hiberno-Norse) copper alloy pin from a ringed pin, probably of 9th to 12th century date
The pin is near-complete, missing the loop but is distorted (with a distorted length of 90.3mm, a straightened length of approximately 151mm and a weight of 11.9g). The top of the loop is missing and the interior of the loop would have accommodated a circular frame (with a diameter of 4mm). The pin shaft is circular-sectioned for approximately half of its length before becoming flat sectioned at the tip half. There is a slight swelling around the loop (of 5.3mm diameter), after…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete, corroded copper alloy and enamel escutcheon from a type B or C hanging bowl of Early Medieval date (likely mid-6th to mid-7th century AD). The object is slightly convex and was once presumably circular, missing less than half its surface area but the majority of the original rim, making the original circumference uncertain.
The decoration on the front of the object consists of three trumpet-spiral “peltae”, all emanating from a shared central spiral. A probable fragment of red enamel indicates the object was likely inlaid with a red enamel field. The reverse i…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published
Description: The silver object is a fragment of penannular brooch, one terminal and about 40% of the hoop surviving. The surviving terminal has a flat lozenge-shaped form, with rectangular cross-section, similar in thickness to that of the oval hoop, which has an oval cross-section. It is decorated on the external face with a central ring-and-dot motif, surrounded by four single punched dots. The terminal has bevelled edges on front and back faces. Gilding survives in the recessed decoration, suggesting that the terminals, if not the whole brooch, were once gilded.
The original h…
