Object type: WIRE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of twisted gold wire of uncertain date and function, most likely part of an earring or other item of jewellery. The wire originally had a square cross section and has been twisted along most of its length and bent into an S-shape. There is a short section of around 10mm on the outside of the larger bend which appears not to have been twisted; this may be an original feature relating to the function of the object, perhaps suggestive of a suspension loop.

A fragment of medieval lead alloy tracery, probably from a window grille or ventilator, dating to c.1200-1500. It is semi-circular in shape, with old breaks at either end. Projecting to the inside edge are two-and-a-half semi-circular foils. This is probably just under half of its original shape, which was presumably circular. In total, the object measures 41.81mm wide, 21.41mm in height, 4.29mm in thickness and weighs 12.04g. The fragment probably dates to the Medieval period. A fragment of medieval lead alloy tracery, probably from a window grille or ventilator and dating to c. 1200-1500. In plan it is L-shaped with a mostly square cross-section surmounted on one face with a central rib U-shaped in cross-section. At the corner both arms are C-shaped in cross-section, being hollow to the face opposite to that surmounted by the rib. The breaks are old. It has a variable white/grey colour. The piece measures 28.4 mm in length, 23.0 mm width, is 6.4 mm thick and weighs 9.02 gr. It was found very close to HAMP-629FA5. The fragment probably dates to the Med…

A fragment of medieval lead alloy tracery, probably from a window grille or ventilator, dating to c.1200-1500. It is a triangular piece with old breaks and an L-shaped back 5.5mm thick. A diagonal rib at roughly two thirds of the distance from the corner along each line creates a 'filled-in' area c.1.5mm thick, with additions to both side of apparently sheet lead, up to the height of the L-shaped arm. This part of the object therefore has a T-shaped cross-section (without the additional sheeting). Extending at a right angle to the longer arm, just above the diagonal rib, is an arm r…

A fragment of post-medieval silver whistle, consisting of a hollow tube decorated with relief interlaced circles creating lozenge shapes, each with a raised central square. At one end there is an elaborate collar of rope work passed between three coils of metal (probably cannetille). The fragment was originally thought to date from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century, but subsequent parallels with relief ornament and cannetille (e.g. LIN-403242 and SUR-07B392) have indicated a slightly later date, in the 16th or early 17th centuries.

A lead alloy or tin alloy whistle, probably of 19th century date. The whistle is cylindrical and has an elongated extension at one end which ends in a suspension loop. There are two encircling collars either sdie of the sounding hole, the larger of which is decorated with knurling. What appears to be a casting flaw prevents the whistle from sounding.

An apparently complete, though with some damage, post-medieval silver "bosun's" whistle dating to the 17th century. It consist of a slightly tapering sheet tube with an applied transverse triple-rib at the centre, an elaborate openwork S-shaped handle below, and an egg-shaped hollow at the narrower end of the tube, also attached to the handle. The S-shaped handle is foliate in design and attached with solder to the underside of the tube and the hollow end. It is max.3.36mm thick. The tube narrows from 4.57mm in diameter (internal 3.60mm) to 3.96mm diameter (internal uncertain) and l…

An incomplete lead alloy whistle, perhaps for hunting, of early modern date (c.1800-1900) and cast in the form of a dog's head. The inside of the head is hollow. The curved edge of the sounding hole survives immediately behind the dog collar (similar can be seen on NMGW-159973) although the mouthpiece has been lost. Moulding seams are on the centre top and underside of the head. The dog has prominent eyes, large flat ears, and mouth in a growling position around a moulded hole, probably a suspension loop. A moulded dog collar has indentations mimicking pierced holes in the leatherw…

A post-medieval silver fragment of a "bosun's" whistle, dating to c.1550-1700. It consists of the body or 'buoy', a cast hollow sub-spherical of sheet silver with an oval-shaped opening and a ridge running to either side of this and above. The opening measures 5.3x3.8mm and the ridge 2.6mm in thickness and 1.7mm in height. The ridge consists of a central rib flanked by a lower rib to either side and appears to seal together the two hemispheres of the body. It is otherwise undecorated. A small broken silver projection just below one end of the ridge may be the remains of the tube (whic…

An incomplete silver post medieval whistle dating to the 16th or 17th century. The tubular whistle is made of silver sheet and soldered lengthways along an abutting seam. The end of the whistle is damaged and partially lost. Two collars, each comprising three bands of silver wire, divide the whistle into three sections. There are two silver suspension rings soldered to the rear collar and a third just behind the front collar from which hangs a silver wire loop. The mouthpiece has an obliquely angled lower portion, which has the letters RC engraved onto it, probably either an ownership…

A metal whistle in the form of a tobacco pipe, made of some form of pewter or lead-based alloy - probably the same material as was used to make cast metal soldiers and cars. The bowl is decorated with a band of loops each containing a pellet. Recent research shows that these apparent metal tobacco pipes were in fact toy whistles, probably of German origin and dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The stem and a cover for the pipe were both of iron and thus have not survived in the ground. See David Higgins, Metal Pipes and Whistles, Society for Clay Pipe Research …

A fragment of a post-medieval silver 'huntsman's' whistle. The whistle comprises a cylinder of sheet metal with a butt joint which has been stamped with a band of impressed diagonal decoration of pellets and ridges. The ends of the decorative band are concealed by decorative wire loops. At one end, presumably near the missing mouthpiece, is a maker's mark which comprises a shield containing a standing bird.

Around the circumference above the mouthpiece is a small moulded line, with a pronounced moulded band above the sounding hole, before rising to a rounded end with a narrow projecting suspension piece with pieced hole. A slightly damaged sheet silver terminal from a post-medieval object, possibly a riding crop (whip) or umbrella (c. 18th century). The artefact has been squashed in places but retains its general form: a hollow cylindrical body (Dia.: c. 12.1mm) that expands to a bulbous terminal (Dia.: c. 20.0mm). A longitudinal seam can be seen on the body; at the attachment end the seam parts have been folded over themselves as this end has been squashed. At the other end a separate disc has become slightly detached from the body at a point where the object has been struck in the past. The exte…

A whetstone of Norwegian ragstone, late Saxon or medieval in date. The stone is sub-rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. It tapers from the plain, flat end to an old break at the other end. Each side is slightly concave from wear. It measures 22.6mm by 20.1mm at the complete end, and 17.5mm by 11.1mm at the break. A very similar example was found in a 15th- to 16th-century pit in Winchester, but it may have been residual (Rees et al., 326-327; ref. 2441).
