Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete Medieval cast tin alloy buckle, c.AD 1250-1500. This is a single-looped, D-shaped buckle with a scooped reverse face. There are no notches on the frame or strap bar where the pin would have sat. The frame is damaged with pieces missing and edged with old breaks. There is no evidence that the frame has a core of copper alloy that was tinned, suggesting an older Medieval date of this buckle. There is no decoration on any face of the frame.

White metal ingot. A cast oval fragment of dense bright white metal which has been tightly rolled, hammered to round-ended cylindrical form and subsequently indented. Similar objects have been submitted to the Treasure process in the past as potential silver ingots, though they have frequently been considered of recent date by early medieval period specialists based at the British Museum, either with or without the identification of the material by laboratory investigation. The mass of the object does not coincide closely with that of a series of weights – derived from the Scandi…

Broad period: MODERN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
White metal unidentified object fragments. Fifty-three scraps of a solidified melted alloy rendered amorphous by intense heat, possibly aluminium. Accompanied by hollow struts of similar material. Though the material is similar to that encountered on aircraft crash sites, its restricted distribution might rather suggest machinery involved in a bonfire in this case. The coincidental occurrence of other metalworking debris in the same area is unexplained. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-2000 Weight: c.450gms

Even though this is a more modern find, it is a highly decorated pewter, or possibly silver-plated cigarette case, with a floral motif. Each outer face of the case is decorated with foliage, but on the back face, there are two centrally-located flowers, whereas on the front face, there are centrally-located engraved initials inside a shield.  Likely produced in the late 1800s, it is engraved with the words 'AC Xmas 1918', and was clearly destined as a post-WW1 Christmas present to somebody. Even though it has been rather crushed while in situ, the hinges are still at…
