Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete strap fitting or mount of Post-Medieval to Modern date. It comprises a white metal mount that is oval shaped in plan and curved in profile. The exterior surface is undecorated. The reverse of the mount has the remains of two integral rivets at each end of the oval for attachment to a strap, belt or other similar item. One of the rivets is now missing due to old breaks. The surviving rivet has a shaft that is square in section and tapers to a sharp point, measuring 13.92mm in length. Between the two integral rivets on the reverse of the mount is a moulded transverse rectan…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

This large stud is like a nail, with a domed white-metal head of 27mm diameter, metal thickness 1mm but domed thickness 6mm, and so hollowed underneath, with a square-sectioned tapering pin issuing from the centre of the underside, broken off at a length of 12mm. The function of this stud is uncertain, though it seems likely to be associated with the nailing of textile or leather to a wooden base, and therefore probably connected with saddlery. It is of closely similar kind to two other studs also found in Nettlestead, see SF-C964E3, also of white metal, and whatever they are this is also.

Two dome-headed studs of white metal of basically very similar production. The large circular heads are 19mm in diameter, made of metal 1.5mm thick, but domed to a thickness of 6mm. The pin or nail-shaft proceeding from the undersides, present in one case but broken in the other, is rectangular or square, 1.5mm, in section and tapers gradually to the point over a length of 20mm. These studs resemble furnishing or saddlery studs for holding leather or textile to wood and leaving a shiny, smooth or domed surface visible. Date uncertain, but probably post-mediaeval.

A flattened white metal section of tube, its flattened breadth tapering from 11 to 9mm, its flattened (double) thickness being 1mm. The surface of the metal presents a corrugated appearance which, if understood upon a tapering tube, would form an embossed screw-thread of which eight turns or consecutive ridges survive. The narrower end is plain and slightly in-turned: the wider end is ragged and torn. This may be a small ferrule or fitting from some screw-mounted attachment, or it might perhaps be the metal screw casing from the stem of a miniature electric lightbulb. It is probably …

This small mount or fitting appears to be made from white metal. It is 22mm long and 18mm wide, and is cast with a front and back and a small hole for an attachment nail or rivet. A flat basal strip 18mm wide projects a central limb 7.5mm wide from which springs a circular cut-out shape with a large circular hole at the centre, 6.5mm across, with triple raidating thorns to left and right, and double thorns rising from the top. The smaller piercing is in the rising limb. This may be part of a hinge or similar fitting.

Small, thin item of hard white metal with one straight edge and one edge opposite this which is undulating and scalloped in outline. The object has a 'front' and 'back', and appears to have a decorative function. At either end the object is broken, and seen in longitudinal profile the 'front' surface is not flat but concave, turning outwards as if the straight edge formed the slightly flared neck of a pot. Within the straight edge the surface is scooped longtudinally, and forms a ridge parallel to the straight edge some 4mm across the object. The serrations or scalloping of the undulat…

One of a number of unusual circular studs found on the same field, but at present not elsewhere, this example 12.5mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness but recessed on the reverse. They are distinguished by being made of a whitish metal. The raised metal circular surface has cast into it a square in relief. Within the square is a rouletted or punched rosette, or circle, of small indentations, and at the very centre a circle or pellet is outlined. The back shows rust corrosion products adhering. See SF CA5205.

One of a number of unusual circular studs found on the same field, but at present not elsewhere, this example 13mm in diameter and 2.5mm in thickness but recessed on the reverse. They are distinguished by being made of a whitish metal. The raised metal circular surface has cast into it a triangle in relief, the corners of which are cut off by the circle and indented midway along the cuts. At the centre of the triangle is a rouletted or punched rosette, or circle, of small indentations, and at the very centre a circle or pellet is outlined. A folded sheet buckle plate made of a white metal. The plate is semi-circular in shape with a length of 28mm and a width of 26mm, the plate is recessed for the frame and two rivets remain, one to one side of the plate and the other in the centre of the edge which would have been attached to the strap. No parallel could be found for this plate, however folded sheet plates were used in the medieval and post-medieval periods.
