Record ID: NMS-42C420
Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval or post-medieval button made from (or coated with) a white metal, perhaps a tin alloy. It is circular, biconvex and solid and it has an incomplete thin wire loop set into a dimple on the reverse. The metal has a grey, silvery patina. There are similar buttons made of copper-alloy, mostly with tin coatings, from medieval contexts in London dating to c. 1250-1450 (Egan and Pritchard 2002, Nos. 1384-1395). Read (2005, 21-23, 27) attributes these to the 13th and 14th centuries but acknowledges the type remained in common use into the 17th century. Further parallels on this databas…

Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy, leaf-shaped, possible pendant. Crafted from a sub-triangular 1.7mm thick sheet of lead-alloy contoured on its lower edge into leaf serrations matched by corresponding veins engraved on the surface. The apex of the upper body is pierced by an oval hole presumably for suspension. The reverse is undecorated. Locally made, it lacks features that are diagnostic in terms of date, but given its white-metal construction, and therefore original appearance, it perhaps mimics more elaborate silver examples such as SF-77C9E5 and LIN-59D105 which date to the late Medieval to early Post…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of white-metal (probably pewter or lead alloy) unidentified object. The object consists of a 31mm long moulded cylinder broken at one end. The opposite terminal-end flares slightly from a moulded collar just short of the end. The outside diameter is 13.1mm with a 4.5mm internal bore. A casting seam runs the full length on opposite sides of the cylinder. Along each seam diametrically opposed there is an 18mm long, arched and moulded handle. The object has a very representational feel to it as if it is a toy or model. It is reminiscent of a cannon barrel although the handles on…
