A white metal finger ring of uncertain date. The penannualr hoop of a white metal material terminates with rounded ends. The bezel consists of a circular disc, possibly of resin, which tapers up at the sides. Set into the resin like material is a white metal coin of Hiberno-Manx style.  The obverse of the coin depicts a draped bust facing left with four pellets, or a pelleted cross behind the neck and one pelelt in the right field. The obverse legend reads ::IIIIIIIIII::DIIIIIC   The reverse of the coin is not visible.  pXRF analysis showed a main peak …

White metal possible ingot fragment. A sub-triangular fragment of white metal, possibly beaten while on a flat surface with one curved edge and a juxtaposed flat surface, broken at its narrower end and curved at the other. This could be a scrap of silver bullion which has been divided according to Viking Age systems of measurement: its mass slightly exceeds one Scandinavian unit of 4.43gms. Were the metal to be identified as silver, the object could qualify as possible Treasure, and is to be submitted to the Treasure process in precautionary vein, ref. 2019 T976. Suggested date: Early…

White metal possible vessel mount fragment. Cast object resembling a miniature spoon with a sharply bent stem, probably broken at its end. The material does not have the density to be expected of silver, nor the plasticity of lead; it might be a tin-rich alloy. The rectangular section 'stem' is bent sharply to 90 degrees, and bent again where it expands to form an oval plate of thickness 0.2mm with an external mid rib which resembles a miniature spoon bowl, being slightly hollowed behind. The display face of the oval plate, with the rib, retains slight traces suggesting it was formerl…

White metal possible ingot. Cast oval fragment of a dense dark grey metal. There are three aligned angled slashes on one side, and multiple annular stamps of diameter 4mm (at least two) and of diameter 2mm (at least three) on the other side. The Viking Age predilection for annular or ring-and-dot decoration - as for example, on racket headed pins of the 9th century (cf D. Haldenby, various dates, re Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire) - might suggest a broad affinity, or perhaps a function as a casual trial piece. The object might also relate to a class of dark pellet-like ingots interm…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) cast white-metal 'Norse' clapper bell (c. 900-c. 1000). This bell is broadly conical in form with a relatively large rectangular suspension loop at the top. The body of the bell has seven facets of uneven size. Inside, at the apex, an iron loop is presumably for the suspension of a clapper. The outer surface is dull and silvery and the inner surface is largely covered with off-white corrosion products. The iron loop is corroded and in poor condition. A portion of the lower part of the body is missing due to breaks. Height: 23.…

Silver coin. Possibly a porcupine sceat of Series E, possibly a half unit (cf. E151). On the obverse detail of the 'quills', which entirely lack the pelleted ends where they spring from the curving 'body', is unusual. On the reverse, the standard motif lacks a range of additional features, and is again a shorthand version of the reverse of larger coins. Obverse description: Eight long quills arising from a crescent; two bars within its curve. Reverse description: Rectangular standard with central annulet and outer border of pellets. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 710-7…

A white metal rivet with a domed head and a hollow tubular shaft which is 2.2mm in diameter (externally) and 4.73mm long. The head has a diameter of 3.6mm. The sides of the head are damaged with gouges and nicks. At just 0.05g, the rivet is very light, raising the possibility that it is made from a modern white metal such as aluminium. Another example from the same site is SWYOR-2D6586. Similar copper alloy rivets but of unknown date are YORYM-E321F1, SWYOR-A17354 and SF-A8EB38. A silver example of Early Medieval date is STAFFS-3A15A3, and SWYOR-0201A1 is an Early Medieval mount wi…
