A complete knapped flint lithic implement of possible Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, c. 4000 - 1600 BC. The implement is possibly a blade or knife. It is formed from a tertiary flake which is tear drop shaped in plan with a pointed oval section. The ventral surface displays subtle ripples of percussion. Short, scaled, low angle retouch is present along the edges of the ventral surface. The dorsal surface edges shows signs of very limited retouch or damage. The flint is a mid-white colour. The implement is 35.81mm long, 20.29mm wide, 3.85mm thick and …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of possible Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2200 BC. The implement is likely a scraper or knife formed from a tertiary flake which is sub-triangular in plan and triangular in section. The ventral surface displays subtle ripples of percussion radiating from the bulb and striking platform. The dorsal surface displays very little reworking. A small patch of short, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch is present on one edge of the object. The flint is a grey colour with numerous lighter and darker inclusions of various sizes. The…

A complete knapped lithic implement of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, circa 2700 - 1600 BC. The implement is a scraper, formed from a tertiary flake which is triangular in plan and ovate in section. The ventral surface is smooth with a partial bulb of percussion. The dorsal surface displays short, abrupt scaled retouch along the left side of the distal end. The flint is mid-grey/white colour. The implement is 35.3mm long, 27.7mm wide, 11.4mm thick and weighs 9.9g. Scrapers are fairly ubiquitous throughout prehistory and are generally less chronologically distinctive th…

An incomplete stone axehead of Neolithic date (c. BC 3500-1200). The axehead is trapezoidal in plan with a pointed ovate section. The surfaces are smooth and polished, with some chips and edges missing from the both ends, which is likely to be caused by post-depositional damage. The long edges of the axehead have been faceted so that they appear rectangular. The axehead is 100.7mm long, 53.8 to 36.6mm wide, 29.9mm thick and weighs 208g. The axe is comprised of a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff - a sedimentary volcanic rock possibly from the Great Langdale quarries i…

A complete knapped flint implement of Neolithic date (c. BC 4000-2300). The implement is a scraper, designed to be held between the thumb and forefinger, formed from a tertiary flake which is D-shaped in plan and plano-convex in section. The ventral surface is smooth with a narrow striking platform and prominent bulb of percussion. The ventral right distal edge displays some evidence of retouch in the form of stepped, short removals. The ventral left proximal edge displays a hinge fracture. The dorsal surface is uneven and appears battered. The left edge contains small, sebi-arupt, sc…

A natural nodule of flint with small possible blade removals of uncertain date. The nodule is sub-U-shaped with an ovate section and has a mid-grey/brown cortex covering most of the surface. One tip of the nodule displays three parallel negative scars from flake/blade removals. The resulting edge is fairly sharp. It is not possible to determine when the removals occurred. They may be ancient or more recent. The nodule is 92.3mm long, 50mm wide, 37.2mm thick and weighs 200g.

Complete reworked flint flake, possibly a scraper, probably dating from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The flint is discoidal in shape with a smooth unworked ventral face, on which a bulb of percussion is evident. The distal face has semi-abrupt scaled retouch around 70% of the edge. The unworked section of the distal face retains a rough, light grey cortex. Otherwise the flint is a translucent dark grey colour with some mottling. The length of the flint flake is 40.59mm, it is 35.73mm in width and 9.96mm thick. The weight of the flake is 17.58g.

A complete flint side and end scraper of Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The implement is sub-oval in plan and is knapped from a secondary flake with previous removal scars on the dorsal surface and remaining cortex near the left medial edge. There is a pronounced bulb of percussion and erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. Retouch is relatively crude and uneven which identifies this as a later prehistoric tool (see Butler 2005 p. 166). Short, scaled semi-abrupt retouch extends continuously along the left edge and the distal end. The flint is a light grey with lar…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000 - 1600BC). The tool is knapped from a tertiary flake with a prominent waves on the ventral face and a small lip at the proximal end, suggestive of hard hammer percussion. There are further large flake removal scars on the dorsal surface which forms a possible piercing point at the distal end. The left medial edge of the dorsal face forms a curve and has further short stepped semi-abrupt retouch creating a scraping edge. The flint is an opaque dark brown grey, with occasional large white patches. The i…

A complete flint Thumbnail scraper of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in profile and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains multiple negative scars and corresponding arrises, and retained cortex along the proximal left hand edge. The distal and right hand edges have fine semi-abrupt retouch and short parallel flaking. The ventral surface is concave with multiple negative scars and a larged hinged flake removal at the distal end. The lithic retains some cortex and is therefore a secondary flake. The flint is light brown in colour with cream inc…
