Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete late medieval or post-medieval lead token, probably dating to the period c. AD 1400-1600. The token depicts one one side a long cross with circule around the the middle of the cross, with a pellet in each quarter thus created, surrounded by an outer border of pellets. The opposing side depicts an indecipherable design, possibly lettering or possibly an object. In the current orientation the design is ship-like, possible a mast and the hull, although the token being found so far in land tends to negate this interpretation. The 'mast' of the ship may be a cross, although t…

Record ID: ASHM-EDF763
Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but worn lead alloy token or tally of post-medieval date. The token has one one side a six-petalled flower with pellets between each petal. On the opposing side the token is split into three sections; at the top, a line with the number 17 above it; in the centre large initials I D or possibly I B, and at the bottom a line with indeterminable markings (probably two numbers) below. In the late 17th and early 18th century some lead tokens bear their date of manufacture as well as the initials (and suggestion of occupation) of the issuer. The flower design has been suggested to…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy, conical mount of uncertain date. The mount has a circumferential flange around the base which probably had rivet hols in for attachment but these cannot be identified in the mount's condition. The peak of the dome has a sub-rectangular hole through it - possibly for a rivet (similar to those seen in post-medieval furniture mounts), or is may be damage. The mount has suffered some corrosion and although the patina suggests a Roman date, it could equally be of post-medieval date.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting/strap union dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 100 BC- 100 AD. The strap union has three circular rings joined at the central point to form a triangular formation. Only one ring is complete. On one side is a vertical strap bar. It is unclear how the opposing strap bar would have situated, if indeed there was one at all. Figure-of-eight strap unions are well documented. As this example has a triangular formation it may be best to categorise it as a Taylor and Brailsford Type 4 (miscellaneous). Other strap unions with sim…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy unidentified object of Late Iron Age or early Roman date (c. 100 BC - AD 120). The object has an openwork crescentic terminal with rounded edges which tapers into a circular base. The underneath of the base has iron corrosion. The object may be a linch pin terminal for a cart or chariot (see WMID-86FE85 and KENT-AA9995 for comparison), but it seems small for that function. It may be a key terminal or a furntiure fitting, although no parallels have been found.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Roman fibula brooch, consisting of the lower section of the bow and the catch plate. The bow has horizontal linear mouldings while the catch plate is large and solid. This is probably from a large Dolphin or Colchester derivitive brooch, dating from c. AD 43-200. There may be some silvering / white metal coating evident.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of an unidentified object of modern date. The metal is very light and appears cast and may be aluminium. The object has a cylindrical neck with bulbous terminal while another bulbous element is retained to one side of the neck. It is reminiscent of crossbow brooches, several of which have been found at this site. It may be a miscast brooch, however the metal is very light and this observation is made only on form.
