A Roman folding knife handle. The handle is made of a moulded copper alloy sheet folded over itself but not quite flat leaving two edges slightly open. In its folded state it is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section depicting a stylised hound chasing a hare. At the blade end there is a rectangular panel with moulded transverse ribs at either end both of which have incised lines running across them to form a double collar. An incomplete cast copper alloy Nauheim Derivative, La Tène III brooch of late Iron Age to Roman (c. AD 25-100) date. The brooch is cast as one piece. The spring is coiled with four loops made of a thick copper alloy wire (2-3mm thickness). One of these coils is broken as it emerges from the reverse, and before it curves upwards and then back towards the reverse of the brooch, where it would have developed into the pin (which is therefore entirely missing).
