1.0 Discovery & reporting A Late Bronze Age hoard comprising a bronze socketed axe fragment and a bronze sword blade fragment was discovered on 2nd April 2021 by Peter Griffiths (finder of the axe) and Luke Harris (finder of the sword blade) while metal-detecting on a field under improved pasture in Llanover Community, Monmouthshire. The two artefacts were reported as being found within 60cm (2 feet) of each other, each at depths of 25cm (10 inches). Description & identification A complete silver thimble of apparent one-piece construction (no visible join or solder line). The body and crown are decorated with regular repeated indentations, possibly the result of knurling during manufacture. There is a wide band of moulded floral/ scrolled decoration, worn in parts, on the lower portion of the body, interrupted by a bearded moustachioed face (front facing, upside down). Description & identification The reported object is a small annular brooch. The silver frame is of circular cross-section. One half of one face is decorated with wide niello-inlaid transverse grooves, with punched annulets between the niello bands; the other half of the front and the back are plain. An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester Derivative Polden Hill (CD PH CD PH, 4.l.c Plate 49) type and 2nd century AD date. The brooch is missing much of the wings and spring, foot and catchplate with an overall surviving length of 53.5mm and max width of 24.1mm at the wings. The more intact wing is warped by iron corrosion (with a remaining diameter of 9.5mm) from the iron axis bar. The brooch is missing the pin, foot and most of the catch-plate resulting in an overall length of 47.3mm. An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill CD PH 4.i1 type (c.AD 120-240). The brooch consists of the head with wings and bow, with an overall surviving length of 50.8mm. The spring, pin, catch-plate and most of the foot are missing in old damage. The semi-cylindrical wings are mostly complete with a total width of 21.5mm (diameter 6.4mm). An incomplete cast copper alloy side-looped spearhead of Middle Bronze Age date. Probably of Davis’ (2012) Group 5 A (Wide Blade) of the Acton Park metalworking phase (1550-1400 BC). At its mouth, the socket has a diameter of 2mm and an aperture diameter of 17.4mm, as well as an aperture depth greater than 43mm (the very end of the shaft aperture is still filled by soil to an unknown depth).
