A modified Roman Republican silver denarius issued around the late third to early second century BC. The type cannot be identified as it has been modified by tooling. The tooled legend COCLES occurs in a restitution type (re-issue) under Trajan (AD 98-117, RIC 767-8) but there is no Roman Republican precedent for this coin (though modern forgeries have been recorded). The Trajanic ‘COCLES’ type is said to take inspiration from an anonymous Roman Republican issue dating to 206-200 BC (RRC 127/1) but this coin lacks the symbols found on this original type (unless they ha…

PONTIF MAXIM reverse type depicting a female figure (Pax or Livia) seated right holding vertical sceptre in right hand and branch in left. Prototype of the mint of Lyon. Cf. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 95, no. 30 for the type. The coin has a copper-alloy core that is clearly visible on both faces where the plating is missing.
