Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A near complete Neolithic polished stone axe/axehead, dating to c. 4000 - 2200 BC.
The axehead is formed from a fine grained volcanic tuff, possibly from Langdale although it is not as fine grained as other examples. It is impossible to say for certain without petrological analysis of the rock. The axe is a pointed oval shape in plan with a wide crescent shaped cutting edge. All the knapping scars have been removed through polishing. The butt end is incomplete and has a small section missing. The cutting edge is also damaged, there is a large semi-circular missing…

Object type: INSCRIBED OBJECT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Coventry
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A sub rectangular, sandstone rock with ogham script inscribed down three of the four sides. The front and back sides are smooth. The rock is a dark grey colour and likely to be a shist type rock (metamorphic mudstone/shale). The incisions appear to have been done in a single action, not repeated.
It measures 110 mm in length, 38 mm wide and 19 mm thick. It weighs 139 g.
Katherine Forsyth (University of Glasgow) has confirmed that the markings are those of an ogham inscription. The script is that of an early style, most likely 5th to 6th Century but possibly as early as 4th Century. T…

Top and bottom of the whetstone are pointed oval shapes, whereas the sides are more boat shaped, with one end taller than the other. The upper surface of the whetstone is an elognated pointed oval shape, with a sloping surface. Polishing is present on the surface, along with multiple parallel striations. Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Mid grey, sandstone spindle whorl, round in plan and flat in profile, with a small perforation in the centre measuring 5.3 mm in diameter. The surface has a number of small, circular marks on both sides. Spindle holes became progressively wider from the Roman period to the 10th century (Walton Rogers, 2007, CBA Research Report). Iron Age and Romano British whorls tend to have holes of 4-8mm in diameter. Therefore this whorl could possibly date from the Romano-British to Medieval period - is difficult to confirm without supporting evidence. A similar object can be seen un…

A polished stone axehead fragment of Neolithic date, circa (3500-2100 BC). The object is a polished volcanic stone with a green/grey colour probably from the Langdale region. The fragment consists of the cutting edge with the lower section and butt end missing.
The axe head is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and oval in cross section with flattened long edges. In plan the sides of the axe taper and widen from the blade to the broken edge.
Both long edges taper fairly evenly and have well defined side facets which extend from the cutting edge to the broken edge. The cutting edge is fa…

Approximately 75% of the total surface has been worked, with the original surface or cortex covering the remaining 25% of the surface. The interior face has been fully worked.

Object type: AXE HAMMER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Published
Stone perforated axe-hammer of probably the very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age period, dating from c. BC 2500 - c. BC 1800.
Axe-hammers are also known as Battle Axes and some of the smaller examples have been recorded as perforated maces (mace-heads). The differences between these types / classifications are uncertain and the artefact type as a whole is in need of reassessment in line with modern discoveries and approaches to artefact studies.
The axe-hammer is probably formed of a fine grained sandstone. The rock has yet to be properly identified by an expert.
In plan th…

County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete quartzite Chopper core edge of the Palaeolithic period, c. BC 800,000 - c. BC 40,000.
The quartzite edge has been struck from a pebble core. It has been worked unifacially (one side). Approximately 70% of the pebble has been worked. One large flake has been removed, and natural breaks have been made use of, to create the main shape, with a few smaller flakes removed from the right hand side to create an edge. By using the natural break it has created a bifacial effect with only unifacial working.
It measures 102.5 mm in length, 80.9 mm wide and 39.31 mm thick. It weig…

A complete struck / worked quartzite handaxe probably dating from the early Lower Paleolithic period to the late Middle Paleolithic, circa 400,000 - 50,000 BC. Bi-facial handaxe as struck removals present on both sides.
In plan, the handaxe is sub-triangular with straight long sides leading to a point. The handaxe is irregular in profile and section. The handaxe is thin with little surviving core perhaps indicating that this is a flake which has been retouched. The quartzite is a dark brown / grey colour with no visible inclusions or faults. Identified as a uni-face handaxe as struck removals are only discernible on one side. However, the maker took advantage of naturally occurring breaks on the other side of the handaxe.
In plan, the base of the handaxe is sub square with rounded corners with sides gradually tapering to a rounded point. In profile, the handaxe is sub-triangular. The original cobble was probably long and narrow. The quartzite is light brown in …
